My Uncle is Going to Nursing Home

Had a difficult conversation with my uncle this morning. The step-daughters have decided it is time for him to go to a nursing home. It probably is time, but what a hard conversation I had listening to him being so sad. He said the last thing he wants is to leave his home. I tried my best not to break down on the phone. I told him the only thing changing would be his address. And the nurses taking care of him. I reminded him that I will continue to call him and visit when I can. And I told him he will be well taken care of. And if he is not, to let me know and I will call and straighten them out. He laughed and told me he now feels better and surrounded with love. He thanked me over and over again for always being there for him. The photo is his birthday card I sent him. He has it beside his phone and looks at it every day he said. I reminded him I will always be just a phone call away. He said I have no idea how much that means to him. He said he didn't feel so lonely after our talk.

Poor man. But I thought it might be coming. And yes you can still talk to him every day. Hopefully he will even make some new friends there.

@CarolDM Mt dad didnt want to go. But then I think he was happier once he was there. He was able to visit with people instead of waiting for them to come visit him.

@wolfgirl569 I know the initial change is the hardest. I worked at a facility for years and they often give up. But we will see.

I am sorry to hear he is going to a nursing home, but it may be the best for him. Is the nursing home any closer to where you are?

It is so hard for people when they reach that point and have to go into a nursing home. I wish we all could take care of ourselves until the day we die.

Glad to hear he did not feel so lonely after your talk. That is nice that he keeps his card by him and looks at it daily. Yes keep a close eye on him some of those places can be bad and harm people

@amadeo He told me it would not be his choice but he understands. He would prefer being at home, of course.

Oh my. I can't imagine how hard that was. As long as he has your support I know he'll lovingly cling to that.

I am sorry that your uncle has to go to a nursing home...maybe it's time though. You have always been there for him and will continue to be part of his support system. It's tough leaving your home. I can definitely understand where he's coming from.

It is always tough to accept any new changes in life. I hope the nursing home really takes good care of him and he doesn't regret moving there. It's so nice of you to make him feel loved.
