Some fun one-on-one time at the preschool

I had fun day at the preschool. One 2-1/2 year-old boy woke up early from nap time, and we had more than half an hour to play on-on-one together. We found some cool rocks on the other side of a chain link fence, and looked for sticks that we could use to get the rocks to where he could put his skinny arm through the fence an pick them up. Then we buried them in the sandbox, so other kids could "find treasures" when they dig there. It's funny: he often calls me "daddy," and some of the teachers get bent out of shape about it. He's a milk chocolate colored kid of black and white ancestry, and his real daddy looks a bit like me. But calling preschool teachers "mommy" or "daddy" is more or less a developmental stage that some (but not all) kids go though. It doesn't bother me. Sometimes I remind them I'm Mr. Horse. Sometimes I don't. How was your day?

Many kids refer to adults as mommy or daddy when they are very young. Glad you had fun.

@TheHorse I will usually correct them but I dont get mad. Little ones are just learning names for everything so mama and dada are an easy way to say I know you are a boy or girl.

I wonder why some of the teachers I work with get some concerned about it. Some actually correct the kid in an angry voice.

@wolfgirl569 Interestingly (and to slightly contradict you), I had a child say, "Mommy, I mean Horse,..." today. This suggests to me that very young children have a "schema" for "adults who are safe" that is actually somewhat gender neutral. But I admit that I get called "daddy" more than "mommy."

At 2 1/2 they really enjoy a balance between independence and adult guidance.

@TheHorse Wow. I remember in kindergarten (about 8000 years ago ) nap time was only 15 minutes.

@BarBaraPrz Heh. It may still be shorter in Kindergarten. Those are wise old 5-year-olds. Both our toddlers and our 3s and 4s get close to two hours, I think.

Hello there. I think there is a stage in a kid's life that they regards teachers as mommy and daddy

I think so too. I have been called daddy, mommy, and even grandpa, in several languages!

@TheHorse teachers should be proud that the kids call them that. That means they trust the teachers

That is just so sweet! I accidentally called my pre-k teacher Mamma once and I was honestly petrified when I made that mistake, but I was also a 4 year old with terrible anxiety too haha

I bet she loved it. I don't mid being called "daddy." Some teachers get all worried about it. But I just say, "I'm actually Mr. Horse, but you can call me daddy if you want to."
