I have fond memories of my first pet. His name was 'Norman' and he was a white mouse. My mother was a cat person and at times our house had cats and kittens galore! Our family have also had guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, tropical fish, budgies and the occasional dog and probably others I've forgotten about! We didn't have these all at once and Norman was the first pet I was given total responsibility for (I was 8 years old). I must have done a pretty good job of looking after him 'cos I had him for several months before I found him dead in his cage one morning

@much2say Yes it was actually my Dad that picked these dogs out. It was always what he wanted. But we loved them just the same. We lived in the country with lots of land.

@ScotMac He was a cute little guy..but he liked to nip fingers. I wouldn't tell my parents though..they might have gotten rid of him.

@MGjhaud I would have loved to have been brought up on a farm. Our house was more like a zoo at times

@rakski No, no pets now. Since I retired from full-time work 18 months ago my wife and I are always out and about travelling and revisiting those places in Scotland we once roamed. A pet would be too restrictive for us.

My first pet came along at my ripe old age of 29. Princess was a shetland sheepdog who lived alongside me till she was about 16 years old. I still remember how pretty she was, how obedient and laid back she was except when it came to the vacuum which she actually loved and wanted me to use every day....

@ScotMac I don't think kids much thought to a pet's name really - or at least they don't have any hangups about it.

Sadly I do not remember my first ever pet because it was a dog and we had to give it away because it kept attacking me when baby me was just sitting there. I do remember some pets after that that I had when I was 4 which were 2 very sweet parakeets.

@ScotMac My brother gave me a hamster one Hannuka as a present and I really did not like it. It was albino and ate its babies and I thought it was going to eat me. So, I am going to say my first real pet was here in Israel. My ex and I were married at the time and he was a mailman and someone on his route's dog had puppies and he asked if he wanted one. I said he had to ask me and that was the only time he did ask me. He brought this adorable puppy home. She was 2 months old and she became my dog . I loved her so much. I named her Carli. She was not named after CArli Simon. In Hebrew when somone is cold we say carli and that means I am cold and I named her that. She was a very sweet, warm and friendly dog.
