Day 6 No Cigarettes

How are things going? Happy Tuesday - AKA - the new Friday for me! This schedule is still new to me so I am not used to having my Friday land on a Tuesday (I am used to having Tuesdays off). It has been a real struggle these past few days. One of my new years resolutions was to QUIT SMOKING (CIGARETTES), and start running. So far, I am on day 6 of no smoking cigarettes. And I don't feel like I am doing very good at this. I have only been using a nicotine inhaler (NOT the same, no smoke or vapor is created, just a nasty taste in my mouth) along with nicotine gum. I find that I enjoy the "fruit flavored" nicotine gum a little bit more. But mostly, I have been just jonesing for a smoke all day, every day since the day I quit. I am trying to be patient. I thought it would be fun to compare/contrast experiences, but also to keep track of my symptoms/experiences/side effects as I go, to see if they improve or change. And, writing on here is keeping me feeling a little more accountable. Sorry if some of these things are TMI, but it is what it is. Here is what I am noticing: *NO change in taste, or sense of smell. *Noticably lowered heart rate. Heart rate rarely above 100 (normal limits) unless exercising *Ran 4 minutes straight yesterday, a little bit of a challenge but no "burny lung" sensation (I do not run, only briskly walk, so this is new for me). *I have a slightly productive cough and am slightly constipated (I told you TMI, ha ha ha) *I am sleeping slightly worse and more fitfully than normal. I am already not a very good sleeper, but seems to be alittle bit worse. *I have been exercising as usual with a LITTLE bit of jogging slowly in between, but I have not been monitoring my weight for the last 4 days. It doesn't bother me if I gain approx 2 pounds, but anything beyond that I will have to start monitoring it very carefully. *Mood is not feeling regulated, still. I am not as "balanced" as normal, in fact, I seem to be irritated more often than not. Ha. I do hope this changes or everyone around me will likely hate me! I am sure this is part of the whole "detoxifying" situation, where after a couple weeks or whatever I will feel better. I also wonder how strong the human body is, and how rejuvinating it really is. Can I really undo 14 years of pack-a-day smoking? Will my lungs, heart, and body really repair itself or is it just not possible? At any rate, I am choosing not to think about that too deeply. Just focusing on right now. Any positivity is more than welcome! Hope everything is going well with you all. Are you conquering any of your goals?

I'm thinking back on the times that I have quit sugar. I have withdrawals like you talk about. Really, six days is not that long. I wish you could find a support group. You are fighting to improve your health. You are worth every bit of pain. Keep going! Please, for you, keep going.

Thanks! It helps even just writing out what I am thinking. A few of my friends say they will be quitting soon. But I don’t really believe anyone until they take the leap and do it.

Best of luck in your attempt to conquer the real demon weed. When I took my mom to the ER for a breathing issue in 1997 she put one out as she walked into the hospital....and never smoked again for the rest of her life. Hope you get adjusted to the mid-week “weekend.” I had a goofy schedule like that when I worked at the post office (my “weekend” was Tuesday and Wednesday off), and I loved the idea of things being “calmer” than they were on the “real” weekend (such as restaurants and stores).
