TDS~~The Dreaded Stew

My mother was the most wonderful cook, and everyone loved her stew--everyone except me. No matter who cooks it, I will never appreciate the complexities of this dish. The beef becomes weirdly stringy and the potatoes soak up the liquid (stew juice) and the taste is oddly wrong. I've decided the world is divided into two groups--everyone who loves this dish and in the second group is me. Of course, this isn't true because there are also vegetarians in my group. :) I do miss my mother's cooking because everything else she created was perfect.

I like stews. Now that I make them, I put the potatoes at last (and not very many). I prefer to add some rice on the side.

Rice is a must-have for me when it comes to stews!

@much2say Maybe you should omit the potatoes as a whole and add the rice so that it gets the juicy taste

@marguicha My son loves the potatoes - so we have to include them . I just make extra "juice" so it's kinda soupy. I love that stuff over rice !

My mother is a good cook, and I can't think of anything she made that I didn't like, except one time she brought some corn bread here when I had Thanksgiving. My dad brought it in and said it was terrible, he said don't tell her, but try it, and you will see what I mean..it was!! I don't know what she did to it!

I wonder why the meat got so stringy, that never happens with mine. My husband likes beef stew much more then I do, but I do like it maybe once a year or so. I use a mushroom gravy base for mine, we like that rich flavour.

I love beef stew. Mine is much better than my mother’s, and my brother’s is much better than mine.

I know how you feel missing your loved since I can relate to losing my mother in 2009.

I absolutely love beef stew! I will say that I don't enjoy it if the vegetables are too overcooked and mushy . . . but otherwise I love it with the juices over rice!

I wonder why it tasted like that? I make a yummy venison stew with potatoes, onions, and carrots.

@misunderstood_zombie Sorry you did not like her stew but glad you liked everything else she made. I found that when I made hamburgers they tasted better than my mother's did.
