I Before E

That's the rule I was always taught in school. I before E except after C. And it generally applies. Take the word friend. It's I before E because there is no C. Take the word Ceiling. It's E before I because there IS a C. But then there are words like being, seize, height, heir, weight. These are all E before I but there is no C. Nudie, homie, movie, review, moxie, and tie all follow the rule. But weird does not. What in the hell was the purpose of the rule? Because clearly it applies LITTLE. The whole thing is just weird to me. I guess at the end of the day just know how to spell. This whole thing is just confusing to me. And I am starting to think the whole thing was a conspiracy. The rule clearly DOES NOT follow.

It's the English language what do you expect! And don't get me started on "double meanings."

lol. Yes. The English language CAN be quite tricky. Have you ever seen the Gallagher bit about words? It's hilarious.

Yep, forget the rules and just know how to spell. That's MY rule! :-)

That seems like a solid plan. Some words to trip me up. Luckily though, those are few and far between. I was one of those lucky ones who stunk at math but was very good with English, vocabulary, and grammar.

@porwest Me too. I was OK with math except for Geometry. Couldn't get the gist of that.

@LindaOHio Fractions were what tore me a new one. And don't let me even get started about algebra. Ack.

The English language have rules but not strictly followed at time maybe because of the usage. Here I see so many people posing "Your Welcome" in social media and maybe in a decade or 2 that spelling will be accepted as a variation of you're or you are.

Few rules follow their own rules. There's another non-follower.

This really is a silly rule as there are so many exceptions to it.

Looks like a German word this weird. Hence, it means 'weird' too.
