Doolally Dusky

I'll be interested to hear from some cat owners out there. We have two cats - Ollie's quite normal but Dusky really is a bit of an oddball. She was a rescue cat and had been at the RSPCA shelter for over six months. Nobody wanted her as she wasn't the friendliest of cats ... tended to claw at humans if they went near her. However, Adam and I, being completely bonkers, are always open to a challenge and so we took her in. Two years later she's now quite happy being picked up and cuddled and loves to play. She'd spent her life indoors with 20 other cats but, once she'd settled with us, she loved being out in the garden with us. However, recently she's developed agoraphobia. She started going to the toilet on the carpet at the bottom of our stairs and, although we carried her outside and tried to persuade her to go in the garden, she just wasn't having it. We decided that, although not ideal, we'd have to bring the litter tray back in and, for the last couple of months, we've had it sitting at the bottom of the stairs. She flatly refuses to go outside but, what's even more weird, is that she sleeps in her litter tray, presumably because it's an enclosed space and, on top of that, she actually eats the litter! We don't think it'll do her too much harm as it's fuller's earth which is a natural product but is there anyone else out there who has a cat that's agoraphobic, sleeps in a litter tray or eats the litter?

Sorry, can't really help. How old is she? Maybe she's going a little senile.

She was a rescue cat and, as far as we can tell, she's about 3 or 4. She's the oddest little thing we've had and, over the years, we've taken in 6!

@olliesmum So really she is quite young. I hope you can find some easy way of dealing with her issues.

@JudyEv I think she's just going to be one of those quirky cats that we're going to have to live with. I don't like having a litter tray indoors when there are meadows, fields and woodland behind our house but, as far as we're concerned, we took her from the RSPCA and promised to give her a good life so, if I have to clean out the litter tray three times a day so be it.

Could she be poorly and is trying to tell you? Maybe a quick trip to the vets would put your mind at rest.

We told the vet about it when she went for her yearly check up and vaccinations and she said that it was probably just a 'catty quirk'. She certainly doesn't seem to be unwell.

Ohh, I am not a cat owner so I can't contribute much here.
