The so called Filipino time

It is sad that I grew up with the term "Filipino time" which means coming in late. My father said that the term was coined by the Americans who noticed that Filipinos are always late when it comes to the appointed time like start of school class, start of work and other appointments. It is worse now because in the invitations for formal occasions like wedding, the indicated time of start is 30 minutes earlier to give people the time to be late.

The term is used also in Spain, when they want you do be puctual they precise "hora Inglesa" (English time) that means no Spanish time. Latin populations are not punctual.

@Alexandoy YES! I think this is the case, it is a pain to fix appointments with Spanish professionals, they are always late.

So that may mean that we inherited the tardiness from Spain.

Are you saying that it is true that Filipino's are always late? I always thought it was women that are always late.

@Alexandoy This comment about the weddings was so funny. Do you try to find excuses for being late or just expect to be accepted because everyone else is late too?

Yes, that is a fact that Filipinos are known for coming in late. But they are punctual when they work abroad or when their boss is a foreigner. When I worked in a British company, all the employees are aware of punctuality except one. He did not last long in the company.

@RebeccasFarm some companies here are strict with attendance that 3 times tardy in one month would invoke a warning and when repeated it results in a suspension. But there are still employees who get suspended.

Don't feel bad, you're not the only county like that! Spain is also known for doing that, and so are most of the Central American countries like Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, etc. Do you have a meeting scheduled for 9:00am? Well, maybe it will start at 9:30am. Or 9:45am. Who knows. We'll start the meeting whenever people decide to show up! haha If there's one thing Americans can be counted on, it's being punctual. If the meeting is scheduled to start at 9:00am, then you can count on Americans being in the room and ready to go by 8:55am.

Perhaps we inherited that culture of coming in late from Spain since we were under them for almost 400 years. Regarding the Americans, my father worked in an American company after the 2nd world war. They have that thing called American time contrary to Filipino time.

@moffittjc for an American that is a silly question. But here that question is normal. When I receive an invitation for a formal event like a wedding, I always ask what is the ACTUAL start. As always, they tell me it is 30 minutes after the stated time or sometimes 1 hour.

@Alexandoy Yes, I've heard lots of foreign tourists mention American time. Many are surprised that we start things when we say we're going to start things. I was at Disney World one time and a Brazilian guest went up to a Cast Member (that's what Disney calls their employees), and asked her, "What time does the 9:00 fireworks start?" The Cast Member replied, "They start at 9:00." the Brazilian guest looked surprised. I guess she wasn't used to things actually starting when they are scheduled to start!

We too have such an expression “janji Melayu” meaning Malay’s promise. So when someone is late for an appointment, we would say “janji Melayu” as if that explains why these people are always consistently late.

We say that of other cultures too about that kind of time . My cousin married a bride whose culture was supposedly late in time like you're saying . . . our family was warned about the wedding and reception time .

@Alexandoy Oh wow, yes I know Rebelwoman . . . wow, she is getting married? That time sounds something like how my cousin's wedding was. What we did not know was that the time between the wedding and the reception would be SUPER long . . . people came real late (the ones who knew the time was late) and I know people in my family were starving .

My wife was a sponsor for the wedding at 3:30 pm. We came before 3 pm just to be sure that we would be on time. The ceremony started at 4:30 pm. By the way, the bride in that wedding is a member here, I think Rebelwoman is her profile name.

@db20747 that is not a good habit. You are like my brother when it comes to time. Well, I am the exact opposite because I always come in early. There was a time that I came in one day early... because I was given the wrong day, wahuhuhu.

Oh well sad truth but we seem to be fond of coming in late in many occasions. Sometimes the VIPs are the one who does this so the attention would be focused on them when they come a little late in an important occasion.
