Short, Lazy Day

Today was a half day at school. I work with a first grade student in the morning. We had a local field trip to a large veterinary business. Spur Ridge.
This facility treats large animals, like horses and cows, and I guess sheep and llamas if need be. It also treats dogs, cats and some exotics, like hedge hogs.
My photo was not taken while we were there. I will not post pictures of students without permission. This photo shows the miniature horse we saw and petted as well as the Service Dog that belongs to a friend of mine. While we were there we had a different Mastiff to visit. Her name was Pistol and she tried to sit in the kids' laps. Pistol weighs 140 pounds. Tank, who is in this picture weighs around 200 lbs. He helps my friend when she has back surgeries, etc. She picked him out when he was two weeks old.
It was an interesting hour to spend.
I may be prejudiced, but I thought the animals were most curious about the student I work with, who is multiply handicapped and is in a wheel chair.
It was fun for all the kids, and nearby, and free.
We had several very knowledgeable little six and seven year olds. They knew breeds and other things. I was impressed.
They saw x rays and sonograms and images of inside of dog's ears and the big bath tub and how dogs get their teeth brushed.
I came home and had a nap after lunch.

It was. It was fun to see the kids in a different situation, too.

@Courtlynn One little guy that usually seems like a wiggly goof ball really demonstrated how much he knows about animals, ready to answer random questions.

@rebelann Nanette, his owner is a bit younger than me. She got him as a companion/therapy animal before her first back surgery. He is very loyal to her and protective.

I am not sure. I do not know who owns the miniature horse, but Tank is very settled and not very playful. He has gotten to come to school in the past to interact with the kids when his owner substitutes. He just lays there and lets them pet and love on him.

Llamas are good animals to protect flocks from wolves, coyotes and foxes.

@TheHorse Your horse probably knew llamas could "kick up a fuss".

What an interesting visit for the children. I would have been in seventh heaven too. I have a friend who has a horse that was brought up as an orphan. The mare has a real 'attitude', dislikes kids and has to be kept away from them. However, when a child with autism escaped surveillance and went to the horse, she was as gentle as could be with him. It was more than not hurting him but actually taking a great interest in him. Strange, isn't it?

I do not know, but I think animals can "read" different brain waves.

It was. They take small groups of older kids over to read to the dogs on occasion.

Definitely are. Our third graders go over at least once a week to read to the dogs at Spur Ridge. We may be small town but we are doing things that really motivate and inspire.

It was fun to see their boarding facility, and their play area for the dogs.
