High chairs for dogs with a swallowing problem

We sent a Happy Birthday email to a friend yesterday and received a nice email in return. The couple visited recently with their children and the latest acquisition – two Jack Russell/Min Pin pups. For crossbred pups, they were VERY expensive. However, one has some sort of wasting disease. There is no positive diagnosis as yet but the problem might be megaesophagus.which is an enlargement of the oesophagus. This is a muscular tube which connects the throat to the stomach. With megaesophagus, the food does not reach the stomach but is mostly regurgitated. One of the suggested treatments is to sit the dog in a ‘Bailey’s chair’ for twenty minutes after every episode of eating or drinking. The chair keeps the dog in a vertical position and allows gravity to move the food down the oesophagus to the stomach. I don’t have a photo but if you google ‘Bailey’s chair’, dozens of images come up. The chair is a bit like a child’s highchair. I’ve added a photo of a very bored dog at a dog show. Have you ever heard of this before?

I had never heard of it. Sadly even mixed breed dogs have a lot of problems anymore as they are called designer dogs and people dont care if they have health problems. Just get the puppies sold

@JudyEv I was guessing that. Thats what makes it so hard here for me to get the breeds I like. Dobermans are often priced at 800 and up.

I would pay a big price for any dog but certainly not a crossbreed.

It's only a puppy, poor thing. At least they now know what the problem is.

I don't know that there is a permanent solution. I'll learn more in time I guess.

But what a way to have to spend so much time sitting a dog upright even when it has a drink of water.

@JudyEv It is a sign of intelligence! Smart people know that the more you know, the more you don't. I hope it makes sense.

@JudyEv I would feel that way too. I would want to take the puppy to the vet everytime anything happened.

@judyev I think perhaps a new dog would be a better idea. I suggested a similar solution when my wife reversed the car over her cat and was severely admonished for such a thought. The cat has survived.

It would be a commitment to have a dog that needed this sort of assistance after each and every time it ate or drank.

@JudyEv The poor dog. It must be hard for him or her. If it helps the dog then I am for it. I have never heard this before.

It sounds like a life sentence for the dog and its owners. I didn't read of any permanent cure.
