This is a story about a young lady called Emmeline Lake who somehow gets herself into a bit of a pickle when she applies for the wrong job. She ends up working for a women`s magazine on the problem page when she really wanted to be a war correspondent. Then she ends up in trouble because she disagrees with the way that the person in charge of her department ( Mrs Bird) does things. Mrs Bird is very fussy about the sort of problems that are sent into the magazine and throws away many of the readers letters. Emmeline takes it upon herself to answer the letters in secret and ends up getting into all sorts of trouble.
The story is set in London during the second world war. It was written by A J Pearce who got her inspiration for the book when she started to collect old magazines for women. She was mostly interested in the problem page of these magazines, the sort of problems that women were having at the time , and the way the problems were answered .

Perhaps you would like to read this book too. The author of the book took her inspiration for the characters in the story from some of her family who were around at that time. The formidable Mrs Bird was based on her own grandmother.

@MALUSE This is not a story about the war exactly, it just takes place in 1941. The author based the story on the problem pages of some old magazines from that time. Apparently she collects old magazines and came across some from the 1940s and took her inspiration from them.

@lazydaizee I'm sure I can buy it online. It would be something good to read since I have to stay home.

Why did you lose interest in reading? I find that I read more now that I am getting older.
