Looking for the positives

Hen bit, weed and medicine

I love seeing fields of hen bit. Some people look at it as a weed. Others see food for bees and butterflies and medicine. It is good for your chickens. It is good for your digestion, muscles and joints. I like to see positives like that. This post is not really about herbal medicine. It is about things I am seeing as positives for me in this social distancing environment. I have been needing to cook at home more, and not eat out. The state and county health orders mean I will do that. Hubby and I both have a tendency to just hop in the car and run to the store for something we need, instead of cooking or using something we have. Social distancing means we do not want to go to a store that often. Going fewer places, and less often means using less gasoline. Being at home more means getting some cleaning and organizing done. Thinking of my own mortality and failures, I am cleaning up my life spiritually as well. Thinking of things that are larger than me and looking for ways to share my faith. I look to build new habits and this pandemic will help me with that.

I didn't know what these were called! I picked some today for my chickens to eat. They love them. They do produce a pretty violet flower and I could only imagine a field full of them. I have them popping up here and there. So now I have to go look up the medicinal benefit of them for joints and muscles!

So far what I read is to make tea with them or to put them in salads and soups.

@GardenGerty Very interesting. I've been trying to check out all the wild native plants around here and I'm finding that most have medicinal qualities. I'm betting that these plants were all used by those living here in the 1800's and early 1900's.

@kareng Probably so. Look up plantain. It was known by some Native Americans as "white man's foot" and it has lots of benefits.

We never eat out or buy ready made food, so nothing changed on this front for us. Not being allowed to get out it's a bit of a problem, but it's only until Sunday.

Our restrictions will go much longer than that, but I am glad to be at home.

@LadyDuck I only shop if I am out of something important like I needed milk for the grandbabies. I had done a good shopping trip before the social distancing, and only went to the store one time in the last ten days.

I look toward the Lord to continue guiding me and when I got another writing assignment today I said thank you Lord because I know this is what will get me through it all

I’m pretty sure most of us are doing that. In just this week alone, we have saved so much on shopping for inessentials and going out to eat.

I like this post a lot, Heather. I hope this pandemic will awaken everyone spiritually, and also bring some new believers to Christ as well. While some people are eating takeout, I have been cooking way more too. Because of that I have been buying more groceries, and because options are sometimes limited while shopping I am learning to cook new things.

Stretching your brain and your skills. We all keep remembering that the church is not a building but the people God has put in it to minister to the world.

I wish people would stop advising "social distancing". What they should be saying is "physical distancing". We can still be social on line or by phone, without any physical contact at all.

In times like this we need all the social connections we can get. Your distinction is right on and I agree.

I agree with you - "cleaning up my life spiritually" sounds great. It has been a super scary time but also has been at the same time, nice to "go back to the basics" and kind of simplify life....It's hard to explain.

Very much the truth. I like to believe we will come out of this trying time a little more focused.

I think there are quite a few positives that we can draw from this time. We will save money cooking at home. We always try not to go to the store just for one or two items but we're taking more care to get what we need in one visit.

I share my spirit, when people ask me if I am scared, I tell them No, I got God. No one will rock my faith. Now, about the hens bit, how do you use it, I have tons.

Hen bit, what I read, and will do when mine is up, is to eat it raw in salads, use it dried as tea, and make tinctures from it. I will research it more as I go along. It will definitely be going into some of hubby's herbal teas. I see entire purple pastures, it is so pretty.

I love these tiny blooms. I see them often as well and call them flowers, not weeks. Stay safe.

We have to find the positives or we will be bogged down by anxiety and depression.
