Are there certain words you have a hard time spelling?

I am a college graduate, and all that, but there are certain words I've always had a hard time spelling. The most salient to me is "restaurant." It's salient because it's a common word, and there's no excuse for misspelling it. I've sometimes written "restaraunt," and had to read it closely before correcting it. Another common word I realized I don't really know how to spell is "mayonnaise." This morning I write "mayonaise" on a MyLot comment and probably would have missed it of not for spell-check. In one of my handouts for the college, I use the word "exercise." But I spelled it "exercize." I chose to leave the typo (or braino) in the handout, my point being to illustrate that none of us is perfect, and we should be easy on ourselves when we make a mistake. Of course, I'd imagine many of us use spell-check when writing words like "hemorrhoids" or "gonorrhea." I remember that there's a mysterious "h" in both, but often forget where it goes, and which letters are doubled. I have no problem using "there," "their," and "they're" correctly. Are there certain words that are your "nemesis" words--words you often misspell, even if you "should" know them by now?

No specific words in particular but I often find myself doubting my spelling of a word that I've quite happily been spelling correctly all my life. Sometimes a word just doesn't look right and looks more wrong the more you look at it even though it's right.

@WorDazza @TheHorse pony sees his typos but leaves them in his comments so the rest of us don't feel quite so uhm... mediocre on myLot. I started to ask about your typing skills, WorDazza, but I figure I probably used up all your good will toward me last night (here) or yesterday evening (there). *really grinning at you*

@TheHorse I usually get stuff wrong because I try to type too fast.

There are intuitive things that happen. For me, a familiar word might look "too long." So I'll go back and find that a coffee tremor led to an extra "o," or something like that. I'm a tad OCD, so I'm always loooking for typos.

Vacuum, effect/affect (I have to think about that sometimes), knowledgeable (I often drop the e), refrigerator (I will often add a d as in fridge) . . . I'm sure there's more .

Good ones. I'm pretty good with affect and effect. That might come from correcting a lot of papers over the years.

@xstitcher I have no trouble with vacuum, perhaps because it's one of my favorite activities.

After talking so long with people from England and Ireland, I find I often use the British spelling on some words. I do that with vanny, too. I can't help it... I see them writing them like that and just follow suit. Are you under a Shelter in Place/Stay at Home order there, pony? One has just been issued here and many people are saying they aren't going to follow it. My city isn't included in the order but I still have to have a special dispensation paper on me when I drive to work or I can't cross into Greene County to reach Walmart. *sigh*

@TheHorse And you're enjoying your solitude, right? The order for Shelter in Place/Stay at Home goes into effect tonight at midnight here and Pretty has already slammed her bedroom door in my face after telling me to leave her alone. I swear, all I did was tell her I'm bored! I think she overreacted... don't you? Even without the order, she normally stays in the house all day, every day... until I get home from work and then she wants to go to Walmart. I tell her I just came from Walmart and really don't want to go back. *shake my head* Yes, I do take her. I know she must be bored silly sitting in the house all day and now, she can't leave even if she wants to leave. (Our Shelter in Place says only one person per household is supposed to go out to get groceries and necessities. Since she can't/refuses to drive, that means I get to brave the sickos in Wally World when she wants something. *sigh*) I hope you make it through this without catching Covid 19.

Yes I've been under "shelter in place" for a week and a half. We are allowed to go to the grocery stores, and I DID get some work done on my truck this week. I cycled eight miles to get home and then back to the place. Exercise is good, I suppose.

There are some words that I misspelled but at the moment, I can´t remember them. It is good to have spell checker like Grammarly.

The spell checker is always telling me I've spelled "attached" wrong (I had to correct it just now) There are other words, too, but nothing specific comes to mind aside from any word that deals with the "ie" rule.

Nothing comes to my mind right now, there are some words in Italian that I used to misspell, but after writing them 200 times in school as punishment I never miss them again now.

@LindaOHio For some reason that one never bothered me. But congratulations! Warning: Some Euro-snobs might tell you that you need an accent to make it "proper." I don't know how to do accents on my American keyboard without cutting and pasting. Soiree would be spelled like this in France: "soirée."

The i before e except after c or when sounding like ay as in neighbour and weigh is something I have to say to myself about English ie/ei words. And when I'm in the beginning stages of a migraine I often can spell very simple words that normally I don't even think about (might and use have both had me scratching my head a time or two).

OMG Hemorrhoids, and Gonorrhea ..what has gotten into you Pony ji...nowadays you are more focused on lower end of your body. I make plenty of mistakes, one of them that I can recall offhand is occasion. I end up typing it as occassion, or ocassion.

Spelling has always been fairly easy for me, but like you, I've struggled with a few words. Restaurant is one of them. Also, I love Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) and many of his quotes. I posted them for years, spelling his name wrong: Suess. I memorized it wrong. Someone corrected me a couple of years ago, to my embarrassment!
