How "Lefty" Got His Name

Most of you know that I have chickens. I also have two roosters of the same breed. They were bought as straight run at about 2 days old. Straight run means the chicks have not been sexed. So you are taking a 50/50 chance on getting pullets (name for young hens). This was my first purchase and the store I bought them from told me they never got in "only pullets." So I brought home eight chicks. As they grew up and feathered out, I found I had 8 roosters. I had to start getting rid of them as that was too many for three hens. I ended up keeping 2 of these roosters. They are Rhode Island Red roosters. I have never been able to tell them apart. For the most part they are nice roosters. I only had to give them a lesson on who is the boss once over the last 5-6 years. Now one of the roosters has started eating eggs. I can't have that so trying to work through this with the best outcome. I needed to figure out how to tell the roosters apart and identify the bad guy. I finally noticed that both roosters only have one spur left on. This is due to adolescent fighting between them over who is the boss I imagine. But alas, I have on with a spur on right foot and one with a spur on left foot. Turns out the one with the left spur is the bad guy. So he is now named "Lefty." And that my friends is how Lefty got his name. However, naming the other one Righty doesn't sound right. What do you suggest? © Karen Gros; All Rights Reserved

That is what is going to happen to this guy if he doesn't straighten up soon.

@sallypup I figure he will take at least a whole day in the crock pot.

@kareng That was one tough and stringy rooster meat but we were poor, living in northern Idaho and if something on the hoof bugged us, it had to go.

How about naming him Loosey. Then you'll have a Lefty and a Loosey. It will always serve as a way to remind you which way to turn a screw to loosen it. Lefty-loosey. haha

That's a good name for him. I don't know what you would name the other. I'm glad you figured out who the baddie is.

@just4him We went through the flock leader training years ago. He has never tried to bully or attack me since. He knows I mean business now. I pulled him off the ledge of the nest boxes by his neck last week so now he listens well to his warnings where I say his name and then start the counting 1 2 3. He is usually down by the time I get to 2.

After I posted the picture I looked at it good and into the rooster's eyes. He even looks mean. LOL. I think for now I will just refer to him as Righty. Ha.

You could call him 'Correct' maybe. A 'southpaw' is slang for a left-handed person so maybe 'Righty' could be 'Northpaw'. lol
