Destroyed Mockingbird Nest Eggs

Sadly this happens from time to time. Was out walking in the yard earlier. Found two mockingbird eggs and a nest destroyed. One egg was broken, the other was not. Not sure if it was the wind or another bird. Probably another bird, since one egg was broken. Then while refreshing the bird bath, I found another half of an egg shell in the water. I am sure the nest was destroyed by another bird. They are all seeking nesting places and get very territorial. Sad to see but it is part of nature.

I just couldn't force to myself to hit the like button. It is all a part of nature and I guess it is to be expected.

I know what you mean. It breaks my heart. But they will rebuild. It happens often sadly. But they are safe in my yard than i the wild.

This is so cruel, birds taking the young of other birds! Nature, I really don't understand why this happens:(

@CarolDM I see squirrels out here, hammering on the little guy! It upsets me, he doesn't look as healthy as the other ones

@CarolDM I've seen that happen to our mourning dove nest/eggs. It's really sad when the babies are already out and that happens.

@CarolDM Our squirrels up north are so nasty. We had to give up our birdhouses thanks to them. Doodles had pointed out many broken eggs and the occasional nest in our yard.

All the time. Birds are very territorial. Some will lay their eggs in another's nest. All about competition.

Strangely, mockingbirds are the ones known for pushing eggs and young birds out of nests.

Yes they are usually the aggressive ones. But I have the large grackles and blackbirds around. They may be the culprit.
