Hong Kong students # 1 and # 2

I had three regular students from Hong Kong, one dropped off the tutor site due to expense, but Ivan (he called himself) dropped out due to expense. He is a very political young man who was involved in the xix months of protests against the government there. Ivan was in the streets, but drew a line at fighting with the police who used water cannons and lots of tear gas to disperse the (mostly) students. The demonstrations ended when the Covid 19 virus got Hong Kong. Ivan loved to read US news and newspapers and was quite interested in our primary elections and who might be the Democratic candidate in November. We had a lot of discussions and I miss his intelligent comments. Number 2 is Eddie. He is a very laid back young man who, when we met. worked as a graphic designer in an ad agency, but did not like the demanding nature of his job, so resigned. It was only a few weeks until he was contacted by a local company to do their graphic work. He asked me what I thought of the idea. I told him that any kind of job was usually better than none, so why not try it? He did and likes it a lot. He has been working from home during the virus problem. Eddie met a young Vietnamese woman through a personals ad who is working in Hong Kong as a teacher. Her command of English intimidated him a bit, but they see each other quite a bit. He insists it is just a "friends" thing. Eddie is a Christian, pretty involved in his church. I did not know that there are many Christians there. This tutoring work has become addictive for me really.

I think the work would be fascinating. Do you see them face to face to chat back and forth?

Yes, Judy. We are on camera with students. We have to have cams open, but some students, especially women from Saudi Arabia, do not have theirs on.

I also teach Chinese in the mainland as side hustle, not really tutor but I get paid just to converse with teachers and professionals who knows how to speak English but needs somebody to talk to in order to practice their new skill. It's any topic, my choice or theirs, I agree it's very addicting because we also learn from them.

You are tutoring them, but it seems you are learning a lot through them as well. Behind every person, behind the screen, there is an interesting life story!

That is a fact. They all have lives and feel free to talk.

@JamesHxstatic It sounds like they are comfortable with you - you must be a great listener too.

@JamesHxstatic - Are you still tutoring? I could see myself doing the same thing in the future. I'm overwhelmed with things going on at the moment, but someday I would love online tutoring. I think I would enjoy it, as well.

I am sure you would. I have stopped as of May 1st. I really enjoyed it but two years was enough,

@JamesHxstatic - You are absolutely right that the past year has been very tricky. It is good to see you popping back in here. I come and go on MyLot, too, depending on how busy I am in 'real life."

Yes, I think so too. I set my own hours and work as much as I want to.

Yes, there are many Christians there. Tutoring can be so enjoyable and look at the difference you can make in the life of another person. How did you get involved?

@JamesHxstatic - I love the idea of tutoring people in English. I can see how it could become an addiction for someone. It is the only reason I still get on MyLot occasionally. I like hearing what is going on in the lives of people. I hope you and your wife are well and staying safe during the covid pandemic!
