Why Can't We Open The Economy?

Let us take a moment to come down "reality lane" here a bit if we shall. I can go to the grocery store and hoard my eggs and my bread. I can go to Walmart and hoard my toilet paper. They now form lines outside the stores and limit the number of customers allowed inside. Why CAN'T I go into Kohl's and buy a pair of shoes? Why can't they limit the people in THAT store? Why CAN'T I be told if I want to go into Longhorn Steakhouse I will have to wait and have to be seated two EMPTY tables away? Why can't I go in there? Hell, why can't they line me up outside of a bar and say you can go in and have a couple of beers and then you have to leave to let someone else inside? Can't we just open up the economy a little bit? If I am exposing myself to buy food, what in the world is the difference if I am exposing myself to buy a meal, have a beer, or buy a pair of pants and shoes to go with it? Somebody please explain this to me. If you can limit bodies and exposure in ONE place, why can you not do it in ANOTHER place? Just to keep the businesses going and keep people working? Why? We are being exposed no matter how we look at it. But only certain businesses are getting the ability to keep operating. Just curious anyone's thoughts.

Sort of like living with a heavy shipping container above your head and you don't know if and when it will drop.

I think being cautious is important in a time like this. Most definitely. But we cannot burn down the economy while doing it. People need paychecks.

@porwest i suspect the balance is the problem right now. i suspect (living near DC) that the disconnect between DC and the rest of the US is larger now than in the past.

I have wondered about this myself. What you are saying is a great way to do it so I don't understand why.

Neither do I. But I guess ultimately there are smarter people in the world than I. So they say. lol

I totally agree with you. I also wonder about the effectiveness of the mask. How far do airborne germs travel? Is social distancing at 6 feet enough? Will it really make a difference in the long run? I hear the health expert here and see the numbers continue to rise. It doesn't make sense to me why we are on lockdown when people continue to get the virus. Yes, no matter what, we're exposed.

@porwest Especially there since that's about the only place we can go in this lockdown.

That's kind of my thinking as well. If you are going to get it, you are likely to get it anywhere, including in the grocery store.

Food shopping is essential. Going out to eat is not.

@porwest Not a question I can answer. Some industries are putting in place COVID-19 testing, temperature checks, etc. Then they want to let those people go back to work in groups. We'll see if that comes to fruition. I think servers definitely should be checked before they're allowed to wait on people again....and the cooks, etc.

But we are still exposing ourselves no matter what is the point. If you can limit numbers of people in one place, why can't you limit numbers of people in the other and accomplish the same goal AND let some other people back to work so they can AFFORD to go get that essential food at the grocery store?

That is such a good question, and I wonder that as well.

Yep. I am not saying open it wide and throw all caution to the wind. But if I can go anywhere in a limited way, why not EVERYWHERE in a limited way as well? I don't see the difference necessarily.
