Display case - Mark 2

I wrote about making a small wooden case to hold coins. The coins were issued in 2016 to commemorate the Rio de Janiero Olympic Games. There are five and each has a coloured circle representing the five Olympic rings. We were making a box to hold the five coins. However, there is another coin which was issued to commemorate the Paralympics. The five-coin box has been put aside and we’re now doing a slightly bigger one that will hold six coins. We are ready to glue the box together tomorrow. No doubt we’ll finish the five-coin one later. I’ve been working on a string mat when there is nothing for me to do in the workshop. This is the photo of how the mat appeared before we started making the display boxes and hopefully by the time the box is finished, my mat will be much more substantial.

You and Vince are both so clever and ingenious when it comes to creating or crafting things. I wish I had the skills and talent the two of you have.

@Tampa_girl7 I know, right! I'm starting to put together a list of projects that I am going to ask Judy and Vince to take on for me.

@moffittjc @Tampa_girl7 Thanks for the kind words. Maybe it is just as well (for us) that we don't live closer! However, unless we didn't charge for our time, you could never afford our skills. We're pretty slow.

He knocked the end out of the case while sanding it down so it's had to be reglued and clamped again. Another day in the making!

@sallypup It's pretty much done now. Another coat or two of varnish and we'll be there.

Sounds like you keeping busy with projects. Show us the display box of coins when it’s done. The mat is off to a good start.

Do you mean the mat? It's easy once you get started. Beginning it is the hard part.

@JudyEv I don't understand what 'string something' is.

@MALUSE I should have put a comma after 'string'. I'll rephrase it. To make your baskets, did you use string similar to what I'm using?

@JudyEv My mother had several like that made from plastic bags. Our next-door neighbor made them.

The mats probably look tricky but they're easy enough once you get started. You do need a bag needle though which many people wouldn't have.

wow, you are good with that mat! (I am crocheting a ballerina doll right now, but only finished with one ballerina slipper & one foot so far ). I am combining two different patterns and try to make a reasonable size ballerina as my little young relative wants, so a lot of undoing and re-crocheting...)

The thing I love most about crochet is how easy it is to undo if you go wrong. And it's quite quick to redo, much better than knitting.

@YrNemo Oh wow, you did well to join the knitting back together. I have done similar with two different dye lots of the one colour - put in a row or two of something contrasting then you don't notice the difference.

We've been meaning to make the display cases for ages. It's been in the too hard basket but now there is really no excuse. I used to do the mats while Vince was taking photos at horse endurance rides but now I take photos too so I don't get so many opportunities to work on the mats.

The string comes in different colours but I like the blue too. There is a pink but I don't like that much. I have to rely on people to give me their string so I have to take what I can get.
