What is a lap for?

My desktop decided to completely quit two weeks ago, and I was trying to figure out how to afford another one. What I didn't know was that my dad had planned to get me a laptop. He had wanted to just get me a camera for my desktop, but he could not find a webcam anywhere. He wanted me to be able to Zoom with my aunts and cousins who Zoom every night at 9pm. Unfortunately, everybody else was thinking the same thing, and he couldn't even find one online!
So he decided to get me a laptop, and now I can keep in touch with my family and friends. It's a bit of an adjustment, and my dogs hate it because they think my lap is solely for them. I appreciate my dad, and I tell him that all the time. He was just excited he got it for such a low price because he loves a good deal.
Have you ever had a laptop? Do you prefer a desktop? How often do you Zoom?

Your dad
- what a thoughtful dad! I still prefer the desktop . . . I am so old style
. . . but this makes it so I can't carry it around with me . . . this keeps my online time in check
. However we do have laptops here . . . Hubby has it for work - and the kids have them on loan from school. We don't use Zoom often - but we were able to have a meeting with my sister in law who was Facetiming my mother in law . . . for now that is the only way we can "see" MIL" from her senior home and she can see us. Otherwise my son (10) is the only one using Zoom regularly for his class meetings.

@AmbiePam My MIL has an iphone, but we have Androids, so we can't Face time her . . . we're still trying to figure out the best app for communicating with her visually. Yah, it's scary for nursing homes, it'll be a while before we get to visit.

I prefer a laptop. I have a table that can fit right over the footrest on my recliner; so I can recline and MyLot. I also have a desktop. I don't Zoom.

@AmbiePam Go to Tablemate.com. They are a lot more expensive than they used to be; but we've had ours for years and years. The one that is the largest and fits over the footrest is our favorite.

@Tampa_girl7 I don't have access to FaceTime either. Flip phones are underrated!

What a lovely gift. Actually my parents got me my most current laptop, too. Usually I like a desktop but the portability is so nice on a laptop. :-)

We got rid of our desktop when our son was away at university.
We needed an upgrade and my husband suggested a laptop since they are portable, and we really did not need/want a dedicated desk area for a desktop since our little birdie had almost flown the nest and we only had it there to monitor his online activity.
Our dog figured out pretty quickly when I sad the laptop on my lap and sat at the other end of the loveseat that she wasn't getting my lap, and I'd cover her with a doggie blanket and she'd be fine until I logged off.
I hope that you like it and that Annabelle catches on that is a good thing too.

Either a laptop or a desktop works fine for me. I like the idea of Zoom.

I use a desktop but my daughter used a laptop.
We've only zoomed from the laptop
How nice of your dad to get you a laptop so you can join the family with zoom.

I only use a laptop. I have been zooming maybe once a week since this situation started.

I prefer a laptop for it's portability. I suppose if I had a bigger television, I'd sooner use a desktop and just plug the CPU tower into my television and use it.
We don't zoom, we use facebook video chat, but maybe once or twice a week.

I'm not interested in a laptop--I don't want to be on the Internet unless I am sitting at my desk--I don't need it at the dinner table, in bed or taking it with me when I go out!

Exciting! When I first got my laptop, I simply hated it. I wouldn't use it for two years (I kept using the family desktop). My husband was very upset with me back then. By the time I learned to use it, it took me half a year to really accept it. THAT laptop lasted for 11 yrs (with 2 years not being used at all
). My mother and older relatives don't care for zoom, so I don't have to use it, (I know how to use it though
