An instore promotion from years ago

In a comment to a post written by Kharla Jolly (@kobesbuddy), I commented on the lovely containers that were in her photo. She said they’d been part of a promotion in a store. A number of years ago, we collected in a similar scheme. We collected tokens which we had to stick on cards and, if we had enough of these cards, we could purchase various items or sets of crockery. We were able to get an 8–piece setting of the crockery in the photo. I’ve shown a dinner plate and a side plate but we also had dessert plates, cups and saucers. Now, many years down the track, these settings are often seen up for purchase in thrift shops. I still have mine but one day they’ll be moved on. Other times, cookware was on offer and I have saucepans and frying pans that I collected at the time. Have you participated in such schemes?

They also got me with that system. I had several ceramic dishes and a big ceramic pan to make lasagna that we really did not need, but they look nice.

I haven't ever shopped anywhere that has had dinnerware offers like that. I remember my mother picked up dinner plates in the early 70's that way. That was about the time that she got her first dishwasher, and you need twice as many dishes when you go from no dishwasher to having a dishwasher. That program came along at the right time for her.

I guess times and fashions change but I was happy to collect the tokens and get the crockery.

The branding on the back says 'Fine Porcelain China' 'Eloquence' 'China. It's not a good photo but it's mostly blue.

This reminds me of our bowl that I once posted in Facebook. Someone remarked that it is antique. Then I remembered where the bowl came from.... the carnival games that we played and won those bowls for prizes.

@JudyEv we frequented the carnival when we were living in the city. The game is roulette. We bet money but the prize is in kind. We always choose bowls, pails and glasses.

No, I never have. I have heard of those programs years ago when I was still living at home. My mother had heirloom chinaware and sets of dishes that she bought special to go with our new home that my father designed and had built. Those were dishwasher safe. She left me her chinaware, and I treasure those. I gave my brother some of her sets. Then again, I purchased what made me happy over the years.

@kobesbuddy My canisters are really old and quite worn. Maybe I should look for some pretty ones like yours. As you say, the lids and seals are effective.

@JudyEv Our older tin canisters worked fine. But when I spotted these, my goal became to replace the old set. The lids have rubber seals and the snap-down handles, keep the contents fresh. At that time, my kitchen was mainly in cranberry red.

It seems they used to have those a lot in the past, I haven't seen much of these types of things since I was an adult. Stuff likes this pops out alot around the holidays though where if you spend a certain amount per week, you get a free turkey and the like though.

There were S&H Green Stamps when I was a kid that my parents collected to get things. My good dishes, which I decided to use as every day, were gotten from the local grocery store promotion. That's a nice set of dishes.

@JudyEv This was in the 70s (I think). You could buy a different piece each week at a discounted price if you had an account there.
