Would you make a decent docent?

I’ve come across a couple new words lately. ‘Gallimaufry’ was one that came in the book I’ve been reading. It means ‘a confused jumble or medley of things’. Thanks to @xFiacre, I’ve now come across it a couple more times. Then today, I found another ‘new’ word – docent. According to one source, this has two meanings. Firstly, in certain US and European universities and colleges), it can signify a member of the teaching staff immediately below professorial rank. It can also mean ‘a person who acts as a guide, typically on a voluntary basis, in a museum, art gallery, or zoo’. I think I’d make a decent docent, don’t you? Telling people all about our native animals? How about you? Would you make a decent docent at some tourist attraction? Photo is of our kangaroos.

Docent comes from Latin, in Italy we still call "docente" no matter who teaches to students, it's from Latin "docere" to teach, to instruct. Very easy word for someone who studied Latin.

@JudyEv I hated to study Latin, I confess that this was something that I really disliked and now I regret. When you know Latin you know the meaning of most words, if you also studied ancient Greek is even better, I escaped ancient Greek.

@LadyDuck I studied New Testament Greek and it really helps with understanding some words that I’ve never seen before.

Unfortunately, I didn't study Latin at all. Thanks for that information.

I actually WAS a decent docent, at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. I didn't do guided tours, but what I did do was much more fun--I volunteered in the Live Animal Unit and would show our critters to the museum visitors. It was a lot of fun!

@JudyEv - it was a lot of fun! I did it in college. My first volunteer gig in a very long line of them.

Sometimes tourists ask questions that are right out of left field. I might have trouble with some of those.

@JudyEv I think those people are just trying to find out how much you know.

@simone10 Some, I think, take a delight in asking something that you can't answer.

I think I would love being a docent in an art gallery or a zoo. Is that kangaroo stretching?

Yes, the roo is just scratching and stretching. If you haven't seen the photo before you probably haven't seen this one either.

I came across it but didn't write it down or look it up at the time. Then I forgot how to spell it so had to start reading again from the beginning to find it. I think it's embedded in the grey matter now.

It's a she, not that it matters. The males have much bigger shoulders. In fact, they are bigger all over but that doesn't help if there is just one. You can see the shoulders on this one. And he had injured his ear in a fight.

@just4him Mostly you can't see a pouch unless there is actually a joey in - either all or half!

I have heard that word. I think on Midsommer Murders or some show. It was used as a docent at a museum. I would be a good docent at a historical site.

I had a volunteer job once as a docent. It was OK, but that museum did not have many visitors, so I usually just played on the computer..

It's a beauty, isn't it? Quite hard to remember. It's in a book which has been translated from Swedish to English as perhaps it's not commonly used in English.
