Treasures in our workshop

I’ve shared that we’ve been cleaning out and tidying up our workshop. Various treasures are coming to light and one was this cast-iron pot. There are also two cast iron skillets. As might be expected, these are incredibly heavy. We picked them up at a garage sale (yard sale) somewhere and thought we might use them when we were travelling but we don’t often make a campfire and certainly don’t cook on one so these will now be rehomed. I’m sure someone will be thrilled to have them. Have you ever cooked on a campfire using these?

I love it! I may have in my camping days as a kid, but that was so long ago that I can’t recall. Perhaps I saw it in an old western on tv.

My sister-in-law turns out the most amazing dishes using pots like this but it's all beyond me.

My sister-in-law is a past master at cooking in these but it's not for us either.

My dad had a cast-iron pot that looked exactly like that which he used to make peach cobbler over the campfire. We always knew we were in for a treat when he'd break out the cast-iron pot on camping trips! I have a couple of cast-iron skillets that I cook with in the kitchen, but I haven't taken any of them on any camping trips due to the heavy weight.

@JudyEv They are, but they are so good to cook in! It could be a false perception, but I really think food tastes better coming out of cast-iron cookware than it does out of any other type of cookware.

Probably sometime in my past I've used a cast iron skillet on a cook fire. Certainly on a wood stove. That sweet pot would do great as a flower planter.

It might be a bit hard to put drainage holes in it though.

@JudyEv Caravan travel is probably very interesting, it is not so popular here because it is quite expensive, I know that people in Germany travel a lot with their caravans

Yes. We do still cook occasionally over a fire. But usually it is food on a stick Or it is on a grate over a fire and we just use regular pots as they are lighter.

My mother used her cast iron skillets on a campfire. I don't camp. I'm sure someone will be very happy to give your treasure a new home.
