I have always been fascinated with seafaring history, and when I brought this book I was delighted to have it in my collection. The book gives the reader information on the daily life of an ordinary sailor. Using pictures of artwork, antiques, and genuine old log books from the time, the author manages to vividly describe what life at sea was really like. These sailors would have to spend months or years at sea ,often living in awful conditions on board ship.

@cacay1 That sounds like an interesting book, is it fiction or does the author actually know a way that you can make money in your sleep?

It wasn't really a glamorous life, was it? We saw this model on the banks of the Rhine in Germany. I was very taken with him.

He looks like some of the sailors in this book. I think he could be an officer or somebody of high rank because of his uniform. Most of the sailors had beards and this seems to have been one of their trade marks along with tattoos.

@JudyEv I don't have tattoos either, but I know lots of people who do.

It's hard to imagine how can they survive living in the middle of the sea for so long.

@lazydaizee That must be exhausting.

@cherriefic I expect they did get tired and they probably did not sleep well because they had to sleep in uncomfortable bunks or hammocks. They also experienced bad weathers and storms which would have left them tired.

This book explains how the sailors spent their time. Most of it was spent working and keeping the ship clean . The discipline has very harsh so they all had to work hard and behave themselves.
