More treasures from the workshop

While cleaning out the workshop, we keep coming across bits and pieces that we thought we’d lost or that we’d forgotten about. These three rulers were my father’s. They are extendable and I’m sure they were very useful before the retractable ones came into vogue.
One of the wider ones is in imperial inches; the other two are metric. They extend out to a yard and a metre respectively. We might offer them to a nephew who is quite keen on antiques. He was also a bit of a favourite with my parents.
I wonder what we’ll find tomorrow.

Not since the last one rapped your knuckles.

@JohnRoberts — no, that was a full-blown 12” wooden ruler that the teacher used to whack me on the knuckles in first grade for the crime of being left-handed. (My mom’s reaction was priceless...might tell that story on Lefthanders’ Day in August....)

I guess they were ousted very quickly when the flexible, retractable ones came on the market.

@JudyEv eh, that's why you try and find family who would like/enjoy and be sure they know the history of the item

Up until last year, our local hardware store still sold the type of ruler in the top of your photo! But I guess they finally stopped carrying it, as everybody buys the retractable tape measures these days. But those were great finds when cleaning out the workshop!

@JudyEv That was "state-of-the-art" technology back in those days! But yes, they had to be very clever in their thinking and designs!

@DocAndersen I'd forgotten but Vince's phone can measure very accurately too.

@JudyEv i have one that is fully digital. You move the fob and the phone tells you the exact measure. It is cool but I miss the old ones!

@m_audrey6788 Some we won't have a use for so we'll try to find new homes for those items.

We had punches that were used to ear-mark sheep. I would fold a piece of paper several times then use the punches to cut the paper. When you opened it out you had a pretty pattern. There were all sorts of intriguing tools in the workshop.

I remember the top one well. I've never seen one like the bottom one.
