Amazon Delivery Box Blues

I have to hand it to them, that box with a chair in it arrived ahead of schedule. I was unaware that we even got a package delivery the day we decided to go buy some items at a Walmart, located about 20 miles away from home. By the time we got back, we both saw a large box, sitting on the front porch. It was the recliner I ordered from Amazon Prime. But, looking at the box, there were deep scratches on one side and a hole on a corner. I thought about it and shrugged it off. I never really expect the delivery drivers to be gentle with anything really. I mean, it's their nature to be in a hurry and throw boxes up on porches, just because they figure, no one will notice that big dent in the side and probably they figure, who cares? Lucky for me, that box had some insulation. After taking everything out of the box and assembling the recliner, I put that box out to sit until I felt like tearing it apart to place in the recycle bin. The chair was black, fake leather, that is inclined not to properly recline except to half way recline then go back to position. Not good. It was a bad design, but then you can't just go into a show room and try it before you buy it. Since the Covid-Pan-Demic we had to rely on our eyes at looking at a picture on the internet at a chair that looked okay in an attractive setting with a table and vase of flowers beside it on a carpeted floor. But that was just for show! In reality that chair was poorly designed, and looked like it was more comfortable for a show room dummy than a real live person!

Too bad the chair was not up to your expectations. I guess you will return it.

Not worth the effort. The chair will remain for now. If my wife wants a better chair I will save for one and keep this one for my own use as it seems to be good enough for me. The box is already ruined by being out in the rain. It was not all that much expense anyway.

I am more disappointed by the way the truck delivery driver or loader handles the boxes. I worked for Sears Logistics Services. The Catalog distribution Center on Lamar Street in Dallas, TX back before the massive layoffs nationwide. We handled boxes of merchandise from the size of a shoe box to the size of a refrigerator. Loading trucks and sorting mail and packages as they came down the slides. And placed on conveyor belts, weighing boxes after scanning items and making sure each order was perfectly processed. When it leaves the warehouse, it goes to a delivery truck that places them to airports or couriers for local delivery. The number of times a package is handled boggles the mind. By the time it reaches your door steps, that package might have been handled at least 25 times. Sooner or later someone is going to mess up and put a hole or a dent or a tear in a box. It seems impossible to avoid.

@LindaOHio , Well sometimes they are handled properly and less often. But even in a regular store, maintenance has to move shelves and rearrange boxes on different shelves. The trouble is more or less with the transport and storage of things. When you have less in between going on like ordering direct from a supplier or wholesaler you get to avoid the so called middle man, because the more handling a product gets before it reaches the consumer, the more expensive it gets. The postal service makes good money having customers insuring their packages for so much money when mailing something via the post office. And when retailers sell you something they always ask you, "do you want to get a 1 year or 2 year service or maintenance policy for just a little extra?'

@lookatdesktop Then I would make a bigger mail box. Depending on the amount of mail you get, it might be worth it.

@marguicha That could work but I need to actually the mail box on the ground level instead of up on the porch as this requires the mail carrier to walk up the 3 steps of our house to actually properly place the mail in the box. It is actually a full size heavy duty steel mail box that originally cost a hundred or more dollars new. It is mounted near the front door, under the porch where it is fully protected from rain fall. The mail man just stands at the foot of our steps, and reaches up to the mail box and stretches his arms just enough to put it in the box to avoid the extra steps on our front porch. Most homes in Dallas have elevated front porches with steps to their mail boxes. If we had them away from the house, vandals would likely steal our mail as it is a city with clusters of homes that are placed next to each other in a block formation about 10 houses side by side with adjacent alleys and side streets.

I once called the local postal service because our mail had fallen out of the mail box. The rain had soaked the mail as it had fallen out of the mail box onto the ground. I complained but they said they were sorry about it, but then the mail was still ruined. I mean, you don't get second chances with mail. Once it is either damaged due to mishandling or exposure to rain it can not be reversed.

Oh, that’s too bad. That’s why I prefer not buying anything online except what I’m familiar with.

Yep. And the thing is, I go into a Walmart and see boxes that are torn open and taped back. The only store I go to where I do not see damaged boxes a lot is mainly Target retail stores. Walmart has a problem with damaged merchandise and Sam's Club also. You go to electronics looking at printer or computers and you see boxes stacked on pallets. Under a display, but you go to picking one up to put in your shopping cart, and you see that some of the packages with dents or hoes in the boxes are also mixed in with the others. I always pick a box that is midway between the front and back of the display. Usually I figure if a box has a dent or a tear on it, it possibly could have been dropped and if so, no matter how well insulated, a piece of electronic equipment that has been dropped is likely going to be defective. Boxed items are supposed to be well insulated, packed in high impact materials but you can easily see if a package is in good condition just by basic observation.

I'm sorry the chair was poorly designed and didn't meet expectations. I'm sorry the delivery people didn't care about how they handled the box. I hope you give a review of your dissatisfaction with the chair and how it arrived on Amazon.

I am so used to this kind of bad handling that I have low expectations. The good thing from all of this is that this chair does actually sit right for me, but my wife wants a better chair and I understand that. I will save for a new one but only when I have access to the chairs I want in person, in a showroom. Then make sure they deliver it properly. One place that does do good delivery is Mattress Firm. But before buying a mattress, make sure it is actually not as hard as cement.

@just4him , It seems that the softer the mattress, the more expensive it is. As the story goes, Pappa Bear's bed is too hard, Mamma Bear's bed is too soft but Baby Bear's bed is just right. Yet, I find that some types of mattresses will dip down where you sleep and towards the center of a queen mattress for instance, will develop a raised center or ridge that can not be flattened out after it forms. I think that Simmons Beauty Rest is a good one with a plush mat on top. But they cost about a thousand.

@lookatdesktop I'm glad it sits right for you. I understand wanting to try them out first. I like a good firm mattress. Less than firm kills my back.

I love bad buys like that I always end up with the defected furniture my brother and sister hates. I have a awesome computer chair my brother spent 375 bucks on. It is a little crooked but fits me well. I am a bit crooked too but not in a corrupt way. The thing that sucks about Amazon is hard to return crap more trouble than its worth. You can do it but takes forever we usually just bite the bullet.

Nope. I will keep it and use it myself and get her a better one, but not until I see it for real in a showroom. Until then I am not taking any more chances online with pics that do not allow a person to choose based on actually trying before buying and I hope eventually, when we get past this pandemic furniture showrooms will reopen to the public, with social distancing in place of course.

I have to keep it. The box got rain all on it and anyway, the chair is alright for me, for just a little over 100 bucks anyway. I will save for a new recliner in the future and go to a showroom and try one before purchasing. Not going to buy online furniture without first trying it out. They manufacture so many bad chairs and other forms of furniture, that looks like they were made for store room dummies, not humans.

Was it mentioned to be of synthetic leather in the product specification on Amazon?

Material:High-quality PU leather (comfortable skin friendly and easily cleaned), high-density thicker sponge ( high resilience and high permeability)
