I would totally do it

If I had the money to invest in it, I'd procure a house from the late 18th century to mid 19th century. One that was a fixer upper, something that had been abandoned years ago but locked up tight. It would cost a lot of money, but I'd restore it to as near to being era correct as I could. At the same time, I'd have someone working on the land. Remove trees that were overgrown, get rid of brambles and kudzou etc.. I'd have a big enough piece of land that I could grow things like tomatoes, onions, cucumbers and strawberries. I'd have some apple trees as well. If I was able, I'd use the same road that the original owners used all those years ago. I'd put gravel down on it even though gravel can be a pain. Bonus if it was in the mountains.. Yep, that is my perfect house. Living in the footprints of someone from years ago. I would need indoor plumbing, so the house would have to be fitted for it, but I'd keep it as original as possible. A small kitchen area too, maybe made retro (fifties era wouldn't be so bad..). What's your dream house?

This is the house of my dreams that came true. It was built in 1906. Owned by my parents in the early 70’s. Sold in 1975 and my husband bought it back for me in 2003. It had been neglected by those that had owned it and we have been restoring it. We go up to work on it as much as we can. It’s 12 hours away.

Oh wow! That was so sweet of your husband to do for you. Will it eventually be the place you retire? I like some of the 1930-40's era houses I've been in too. Several of my relatives live on the same street and their houses are all of that era. I'm not sure I've ever been in a early 1900's house though.

@Tampa_girl7 I've just now seen that you posted pictures here. They weren't showing up for me before. Will you remove the pedestal sink for a vanity instead?

@ScribbledAdNauseum we hope to move there one day. It’s the best gift that I’ve ever been given.

Not that, those old houses are drafty, and expensive as Hell to heat. Not that they don't have a certain rustic charm. At my age, I think just something fairly spacious and urban, modern with everything close by to walk to. Beach or Mountains preferable.

Yeah, I've thought about that too. Since I don't see it ever happening anyway, I like to imagine that I'd just heat it the same way the original owners would have. Using the fireplaces, which would end up being maintenance in and of itself. I love the water, but I think I'd still have to go with the mountains. More peaceful.

@ScribbledAdNauseum One thing though is if I won the lottery or something...I wouldn't live there, but there is an Old mill near hear which I think is in the historic register, I would fix that up and make it into a working mill..and maybe even a restaurant (I would hire others to run it of course)..it would be a great tourist stop and add revenue to the area..It is quite scenic there, and although out of the way..some would definitely patronize it.

@snowy22315 There's an old mill a few hours away from here that I visited last year. It's still a working mill with a quaint little general store. Towards Western NC. Though I have stopped at one along the blueridge parkway. There's a mill / restaurant onthe Blueridge somewhere that I've been to once. Not the restaurant as it was closed..

I always preferred old houses because of their history and character. My dream house would probably be a two bed, two bath, 1920s bungalow, with a small yard for my two Chihuahuas.

Older houses may not have a lot in space, but they sure knew how to make them aesthetically pleasing.

That sounds like my husband. I just want a regular castle, no moat or anything fancy lol

I think if I had a castle, it would be on a remote island where boat access was limited to once or twice a week.

I know a young man that did this, on main street in East Tawas. The home is like a palace, it's beautiful! In the next block, a couple bought an old home and turned it into a bed&breakfast, it's so lovely!

@kobesbuddy Oh I see. I've never stayed at a B&B at all, though I had a chance to a few years ago.

Oh wow! Have you stayed at the bed and breakfast? Is it one that operates as a restaurant as well? I know some do this. Yes, there are plenty of restored homes that are now businesses here in my city. One grand building (I think it was a government building years ago) is now home to a sweet shop with other spaces in the building to rent as well.

@ScribbledAdNauseum No, we've never stayed at this bed&breakfast. It's not a restaurant, only breakfast is provided for their customers.

Oh, i don't imagine I ever will, but it would be nice, wouldn't it? I'd need to find a guy who would go along with my quirks and be just as enthused for such a project. It might help if he was rich, too!

@LindaOHio My mother, rest her soul, used to wish to find an older, rich man. She wanted to buy a big plot of land for dogs to roam free, and for her to be left alone!
