I just saw something really sweet!

I was looking out my window, typing away, when I saw something that made me smile.
A little girl of about 2 1/2 was riding her bike with her training wheels on. She had her pink and purple helmet on and was "cruisin'." Her dad was walking by her side.
Suddenly she held up her hand to her daddy and said something I couldn't understand. It might have been in Hindi or one of those 999 other Indian langages I can't differentiate.
Then I could understand/infer what she had said: "It's for you." Without hesitation, her daddy took the "cell phone" and, with a straight face (just as I do), had a serious conversation with someone. The little girl stopped and waited with her hands behind her back.
After about 20 seconds, daddy gave the cell phone back to the little girl (I looked closely to make sure there was nothing really there) and she grabbed it with her left hand, switched hands, and put it into he right "pocket."
It made me "smile out loud" (I may have actually shown some teeth), but it also made me miss my interactions with my "sprouts". I attach a photo of me listening intently as one of my favorite kids talked away about the garden we were visiting.
Sigh. Did you something that made you smile today. Or at least snarl with less furvor?

I love to listen, when little children express themselves. My son had an invisible motorcycle, that we took with us, everywhere. One day Chad said, 'Daddy don't forget my motorcycle!' Bruce had to open the trunk, carefully load it in and then, close the trunk. Chad watched every move, to make sure his 'motorcycle' was included. When we got to Bruce's mother's, he had to unload Chad's invisible motorcycle

Oh, not to be self-absorbed (even if I am), but I wrote several months ago about an ostensibly autistic boy who...wait...this is going to take too long...the point is a teacher missed an opportunity for a "bonding" moment with the child when she couldn't see that the cow he'd made (out of Legos) was a cow. (I could easily see it was a cow.) I wonder if he'd remember that moment now. I may ask him when we get the school going again. If he remembers, I'll ask him to make me a cow.

@TheHorse I worked with preschoolers so much, it was accepted as perfectly 'normal'! Bruce was dumbfounded

@wolfgirl569 I love the 2s. Have you heard of the Elephant and Piggie books? They're by Mo Willems and are perfect for the 2 1/2 to 5 set.

I think the guava on the tree made me smile upon seeing that it was half eaten by birds.

@TheHorse not really leaving me half. It would be great if they leave just the stem as proof that they enjoyed the guava.

@Alexandoy They could at least flutter around you a bit and maybe briefly land on your shoulder as thanks. You could feel like St. Francis of Assisi.

@JudyEv I've had that happen! Alison Gopnik, a Professor of Developmental Psychology at UC Berkeley actually mentions that kind of thing happening in her book, The Scientist in the Crib. I think the kids need to be reassured that their grown-ups know the distinction between fantasy and reality. I usually just reply, "Oh, in the real world, I'm your teacher. But in our pretend game right now I'm daddy and you just brought me some cake." Then they feel "safe" and we can get back to playing.

They really do. If you put your pizza in the imaginary refrgerator to cook it, you have to be informed by the other kids that that block is the oven, where your sand pizza goes, and by the dinosaur is the fridge, where you put ice cream.

@Jessicalynnt As I recall, they always liked talking on phones (just like mom and dad). But now it's cell phones, so the motions are different. Yeppers, they're imitation machines.

@TheHorse Years ago we happened to be in our backyard and saw a line of ducks crossing our field into the woods. The last one in the line was a baby and got so tired, he just stopped and sat down. The little duck in front of him looked back, turned around, came back to the baby duck and sat down beside him. After a minute, they both resumed their walk to the woods.
That was the sweetest thing I've ever seen. I've wished a hundred times we had filmed it.
