Update on Old Lefty

Remember the bad rooster, Lefty, who was eating eggs? Well he is doing somewhat better and still alive. He's not consuming all of the eggs every day but is still getting into 1-4 I would guess. I've been feeding them more and giving them more fresh "greens" from the yard or free food as I call it. The only other thing I did was move righty into the "good girls" coop along with all the babies from last year. They are getting along just fine and if one of the girls decides to go broody so be it. They hubby doesn't want me buying more babies/chicks this year, but if they just happen in the chicken coop, that is not my fault. Right? I'm going to five Lefty a little more time to clean up his act, but I still do not think he is going to make it. We will see. I've been nice and patient with him so far. He's a lucky bird! If Lefty was yours, would he already be in the stew pot? © 2020 Karen Gros, All rights reserved.

It's good he's starting to clean up his act. If it were me, he'd be in the stew pot a long time ago.

@just4him He's been doing better. I think the problem now is that a couple of hens joined in. I need a couple of days to spend outside keeping an eye on that chicken coop to see who is guilty now. He hasn't been caught eating anymore.

@kareng You mean you're about to turn on the stove and get the stew pot ready?

Your rooster looks great, rare to be seen these days in this broiler age.

Yep he should with all the food he puts away. They get chicken scratch, layer pellets and fresh greens every day. You would think he would be full and not go eating eggs. NOT!

@msdivkar They do. And hens will follow suit because they are curious.

We had ducks once. The Mister duck started chasing the ducklings and I mentioned that to the feed store man. He said to get Mister away from the ducklings cause killing the babies is a natural thing for the male ducks.

I think once a hen or rooster starts eating eggs they are never going to stop no matter what you do. Just sayin'. I hope Lefty does stop but I wouldn't be holding my breath.

There has to be a lot of changes. I have caught a hen or two also in the act. So he has shown the ladies how to get an extra snack or two during the day. At least I am getting eggs from that coop again.

@JudyEv I've seen one or two have at them. Trouble is I have several of that species so hard to track them unless I am right there and see them and pull them out right then. It seems to have stopped or at least slowed down for now.

@kareng I've heard that once one is eating eggs the others learn the habit. Maybe you'll have to have a few chicken dinners.

I would have a problem with his egg-eating. I might have to let someone else "adopt" him.

He may end up in a pen all by himself in that case.
