Social Media "Experts" on Current Events

I think freedom of speech is a wonderful thing. I defend it even when people say and write things I disagree with, or share their opinions in rude, arrogant ways. But I don't appreciate or respect that approach. I'm referring to people who spout their opinions about such things as politics, religious beliefs and currently, the Corona Virus Pandemic. Social media is primarily about sharing opinions, but many use it as a platform to vent their anger and condescending attitudes toward anyone who disagrees with them. There is NO WAY that anyone can know/understand ALL the accurate facts about such broad, complicated topics. But I frequently see posts such as: "Anyone who goes out without a mask is an idiot!" "People who believe in God are naive and stupid enough to base their life on a fairy tale!" "The Liberals are trying to destroy the United States!" Do some people really think that such posts will make others change their minds? Hmmm, I truly doubt it. There are respectful ways to share one's views. I'd like to see more decent behavior online. How about you?

Sadly.... people are using the social media platforms to write down all the stupid crap that enters their mind.

I don't think that freedom of speech should mean that we can say whatever we want in whatever manner we choose. We need to treat others as we would like to be treated.

@BloggerDi I like to express my opinion and listen to other peoples opinions also but we can do it in a kind way and appreciate that there are different opinions. Lit's live and let live!

Thank you @kanuck1. I agree that people should do that, but I'm glad that in America, people still have the freedom to express their opinions without fear of government persecution. That is, as long as they are not breaking the law by threatening someone, slander, etc.

People are beginning to be a lot more aggressive. We have many people here who pass by my window each day and they don't wear masks. Pretty much our streets are empty and you just have to be careful in the stores.

Wait...I'm an idiot? I go outside without my mask on all the time. So does everyone else. I do keep a mask with me for those times when I can't social distance. I've already had (and recovered) from the virus, so I'm not worried about getting it. And I caught it in March, so I am WAY past the point of being able to spread it to others (don't worry, I was in quarantine for 19 days). But I'm still an idiot, right? haha I believe in God. Have I been naive my whole life? I didn't know it was just a fairy tale. I like fairy tales. As a conservative, I know for a fact that the liberals have already destroyed this country! LOL (that's a joke! The liberals haven't fully destroyed the country quite yet!)* *another attempt at humor. I actually can have meaningful political conversations with others without resorting to name calling or bashing.

@BloggerDi I tend to look at the humorous side of things. Just to forewarn you! And thank you! Having the virus got pretty rough there for a while, but I soon bounced back and made a full recovery. I was one of the lucky ones.

Funnily enough I saw someone comment on a BBC article yesterday remarking that the UK was in a bad way after the Brexit vote because one half of the country "quite rightly" (their words) hated the other half. My response was to imply this person was a classy individual if they thought it was acceptable to hate someone they don't even know just because they have a different opinion. People are just so sure they're right they aren't prepared to entertain the possibility that someone else could disagree. In my opinion it's a failure of our politicised education system. Kids are taught what to think not how to think.

@BloggerDi I did think it was just in the UK that people had become so selfish and self-righteous but the more I encounter people from elsewhere the more I realise that selfishness is the true global pandemic.

Thank you for sharing about the Brexit article and comments @WorDazza. That's a great example. Yes, people being so sure they're right is just another example of self-centeredness. I recently watched a video about how people are ego-driven in almost everything we do, without even realizing it. I believe it's true. I agree that many countries have politicised education systems- the US certainly does!
