1880 - In Menlo Park, New Jersey, USA, Thomas Edison performed the first test of his electric railway.
1995 - Alison Hargreaves, a 33-year-old British woman, becomes the first woman to conquer Everest without oxygen or the help of sherpas.
1941 - Ritchie Valens was born. He was an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. His two hits were La Bamba and Donna. He was killed in a plane crash just 8 months into his recording career on February 3, 1959. Buddy Holly, J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson and pilot Roger Peterson were also killed in the crash. Valens was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
1986 - Robert Pattinson was born. He is an English actor most known for his role in the Twilight movie series, 5 in all, that he starred in along with Kristen Stewart (2008-2012). The movies earned over $3.3 billion worldwide and made Pattinson one of the highest-paid actors in the world!

I'd like for someone to tell me how they came up with Root Canal Appreciation Day. Did they run out of everything else that could actually have been a reason to celebrate? For those of you who have never "appreciated" a root canal, you have no clue.
