An evening well-spent!

Horse Jr. did the typical 11-year-old thing and played too much Minecraft, leaving an important school assignment only half done. His mom was mad at him, he was freaking out, so he called me at about 4:30 PM and asked whether he could come over and work on his assignment with me. His assignment is to write a paper and do a presentation on a State. Of course, he chose Montana, as he knows that's where I go every Summer while he's in Europe. He sat on my bed with his laptop, I sat at my desk with my computer on, and we basically had a four-hour discussion as he wrote. I sent him home at 8:30 with the assignment done. His mom was worried that I was doing the assignment for him, but I was not. He did ask me questions about apostrophes and things like that. And I did remind him Yellowstone and Glacier Park have the most remaining grizzly bears in the United States. I DID teach him what "Continental Divide" means, but it was up to him to express it in his own words. I think we both had a good time. I took this photo last Summer. The Gallatin River is a tributary to the Missouri River, which, in turn, is ultimately a large tributary to the Mississippi River.

What a great time well spent with him. He will never forget it, and you have forever memories as well. Good for you Dad.

Thanks, Carol. I really do enjoy collaborating in the learning process, whether it be with adults or kids.

@CarolDM As long as someone doesn't suffer from severe "confirmation bias," I enjoy learning stuff with people. And I think having conversations with people about stuff makes the "facts" stick in everyone's head more.

I'm glad you were able to spend some quality time with your son doing a Dad/son thing.

@LindaOHio But his mom just told me that he's behind on some other homework as well. He spends too much time playing Minecraft on his cell phone or laptop.

What a good dad you are ! Not only did he get his project done, he actually learned something beyond the assignment AND it was a good father and son moment.

He wants to gather pictures for his presentation this weekend. Finding cool pictures of Montana will be fun. And easy.

He's actually my neighbor kid from Croatia. I've helped raise him up since he was three.

that sounds like a fun way to write a paper, and I bet he got more out of it that way, discussion helping it stick in his brain

Good thing he’s a kid or he’d have his report threading, “The continental divide was a John Belushi movie...” It’s not very interesting to cross in the desert, I know that from experience.

That's a great way to help Horse Jr. He probably learnt quite a bit about researching a subject too.
