Another item from the workshop

I’m sure you’ve all seen one of these in your lifetime. It’s been sitting in our shed and now it’s had a coat of paint and will be put up for sale. It’s a boot last and the cobbler’s essential piece of equipment I guess. The piece nearest the camera is for the heel and the other sections for either large shoes or slightly smaller shoes. Our workshop is really starting to show the results of our efforts and we’ll have more than enough junk to fill the rubbish bin again tomorrow, ready for emptying on Monday. Burning season is open now and we’re been out raking up leaves. They are too wet to burn at the moment so we’ll let them dry out for a day or two before setting alight to them.

@JudyEv there are still roaming cobblers in our country, besides fixing shoes they fix umbrellas ( quite odd now) and make manual key duplicates, all the cheap Made in China is putting them out of business so the trade is slowly dying now, they are becoming very rare.

@louievill We don't have travelling people but there are shops where they will mend shoes. My father would put new heels and soles on his workboots using this last.

@JudyEv I wish I could come help. Anybody ever tell you that you remind them of The Thornbirds? (Movie or book)

@sallypup No, I haven't been told that. I'll have to read the book now. And it would be nice if you could help. We could probably offload a lot of stuff onto you.

@DianneN Any that are sellable we'll sell unless they have sentimental value, in which case we'll offer them to a nephew who likes that sort of thing.

That's an interesting tool. I haven't seen one before, but it's easy to see it's for shoes with your explanation.

@wolfgirl569 That's for sure. Vince was a bit overwhelmed when we started but just by doing a half-hour a day, it's getting done and becoming more a pleasure than work.

Oh this brings back memories, my dad had a cobbler's last and he always use to repair our shoes when I was young. I can still remember the smell the sheet of leather that dad would cut the new sole or heel from when I think of him doing this. Thanks so much for posting this and for the blast from my past that it evoked. I have a huge smile on my face now just remembering my dad God bless him.

My Dad repaired our shoes and boots on this one too. I remember the smell of the glue. You could buy new soles and heels and they were glued and/or tacked in place. I'm pleased I hauled up some nice memories for you.

If you wanted to nail a new sole onto a shoe, you would slip the shoe over the shape then you'd be able to work on the sole.
