The Virtual Graduation

Goosebumps grew on my arms as a the National Anthem of the United States of America was played on the piano, and a bunch of young faces are in the backdrop, projected in a way that these faces are in a hall, on a graduation ceremony. Okay, I was napping, and this scene woke me up. I left the monitor on again, and the Star Spangled Banner reverberated on the screen. I watched, and thought that these young graduates are probably those born during the 9/11 era. Now, they are the youth of the pandemic. I believe so much in the juvenile of the new millennium. Theirs may be the selfie generation but theirs is also the generation who has to bear the mistakes of mine. Congratulations, Class of 2020!
Hosted by Lebron James, along with a collection of actors, musicians and other influencers, the ‘Graduate Together’ special is a virtual graduation ceremony ...

Very good analogy you have in there. I think my son is part of that generation. Unfortunately he was the first batch in his school that has no graduation ceremonies. Sad but the only consolation for that there was not much celebration to spend on. I remember that he was still in her mom’s tummy when 9/11 happened.

@eileenleyva Thanks! We proud parents are just wondering what kind of social world will he be living in the next decade or so. All of these are very knew to us and even our parents before us never had this kind of sudden change in our social norm. I thought internet was strange enough to transform our ways but this virus has drastically change our ways even further. I hope this is for the good of everyone foe a new world ahead.

Here's to your son who now bears the weight of the world. My prayers and hopes and cheers, that he gets through this unscathed, and emerge a wonderful young man, and inherit the earth. Congratulations! That includes the proud parents who reared the son.

@rsa101 Thought about it and realized my beloved grandma was a child when the Spanish Flu happened. Grateful my own parents didn't have to endure the pandemic, that would have been a thorn in my heart. But yes, we are exactly at a pandemic we are meant to be. Both my children are giving this novel disease a fight, and when I reflect upon it, this is what I prepared my children for all their growing up years - to hurdle whatever comes your way. Our children will survive because we have reared them the right way. The novel coronavirus could dissipate in less than two years if that vaccine gets done. And life begins anew. God has given our children a new berth, the earth is healing. The children will be all right.

Good thing they were able to still graduate virtually.

That, definitely, is the most wonderful thing that happened. Those graduates needed an affirmation that they did complete their studies.

@eileenleyva True. Although they missed getting bored while waiting for their names to be called under the hot sun. For me, that's still priceless!

@cherriefic Yes, that's true. Am always in the middle, though. The people whose surnames are at the end of the alphabet do receive the loudest applause.

@eileenleyva ... and yet with technology, we are poised to commit the same mistakes. We may have an advanced technology but with the same backward thinking, we are doomed to commit the errors of the past.

Yup, the pandemic was not on our vocabulary. But we were forewarned. I got glued to the news, too, when the AIDS came out, the ebola, the H1N1, the SARS. I simply thought, except for the HIV and AIDS, that these viruses are endemic. Now I know. Now we know.

A most unusual, and definitely unique kind of virtual graduation this pandemic ceremonies is. I do empathize with the graduates for the uncanny circumstances. But I do know this will live to posterity as the challenging event that was made possible by the youth of this generation, and very selfless people.
