For a long time I was facing problem of rats in my house . No matter what technique I tried the rats outsmarted me.
I tried a rat catching spring device but they just seem to avoid it no matter what I put as a bait. Then one day I tried the sticky pad which a friend adviced. Confident of catching the rat but was shocked the next day to find the pad in bits and pieces. Looked like team efforts of the rats spoiled my plans . I tried even the rat poison but the rats seems to know what it is and avoid it completely. Tried to get a cat but the dogs in my locality made them run away.
Fedup I just accepted the rats and let them have a free run of my house. I love dogs and one of the stray dogs in my locality had an infected wound and so I decided to treat it inside my house every night and allowed it to sleep inside.
At around 02:00 am in the morning I was woken up by a huge trashing sound of some utensils in my kitchen. I ran to the kitchen thinking a burglar inside but surprised to find the stray dog hiding beside the refridgerator . With a bit of coaxing I brought the dog out and to my utter surprise and happiness I found the rat I was looking for in the dogs mouth.
I literally danced with joy and hugged the dog in helping me with getting rid of a rat which has made my home as his own.
In a couple of days all the remaining rats were caught by the dog and I was relieved.
So finally I realised dogs too catch rats and not just cats who were made famous by the TOM & JERRY cartoons.

Our first dog was a rat killer. We named her Jedi for her ferocity. She had decimated the rats in our neighborhood. Even the mice inside our house, they were finished, all of them.

@Alexandoy Yes dogs are ferocious, fast and do it cleanly. Cats seem to play with the mice and rats once they catch one.

@jayanth_77 in our former home, neighbors say that cats were afraid of rats because the rats were big.

@Alexandoy yes the rats can be as big as cats. They destroy your car and house cabling, your clothing , stored food and even bite. They also spread disease and dirty your house and car carpet.

@1210800460 yes catching rats may not be a dog's real interest but they do it if nothing else to catch and pass their time

yes dogs do catch rats and infact better that cats. They don't run around like cats. Wait patiently and as the rat wriggle close by catch hold of the rat with lightning speed. They can detect rats thru their good sense of smell, hearing and sharp eyes even during night time.

I am glad when I had my dog she did not catch rats or give them to me. She liked balls and pine cones. So the dog helped you catch the rat thanking you to for taking care of him or her. The dog is great to have around not only for company but helping you with the rat problem. I was under the impression if one has a cat a rat will not enter their home.

I never knew that. I did see a big rat climbing up a building once and thought it will not come to my home because I have a cat and now I find out dogs catch rats too. My dog didn't but that does not mean anything.

Rats will enter your house even if you have a cat. Cats in a house will not catch rat if it is well fed by the owner.

Dogs don't catch rats for food. it is more to do with territory protection.

@Lavanya15 and I wish a cat can also do a dog's work of guarding the house.

I have never heard of it, but maybe if a stray dog is hungry he might kill smaller animals.
