A new bird at the bird-bath

We saw a new-to-us bird at the birdbath the other day. It has visited a couple of times but flits in and out so quickly neither of us has a decent photo of it yet. This photo is heavily cropped so it’s a bit blurry. I had a lot of trouble trying to work out what it was but it seems it’s a white-breasted robin which is endemic to our little corner of the world. The white-breasted robin (Quoyornis georgianus) is a passerine (seed-eater) bird and is the only species in the genus Quoyornis. It is between 14.5 and 17.0 cm (5 3/4 and 6 3/4 in) long and weighs around 16 to 20 grams. It is what is known as a cooperative breeder meaning birds other than the parents help raise the chicks. I find it really hard to identify birds even though we have a book of the various Australian birds. It’s cute though, isn’t it?

@JudyEv There are a few little birds that I only see around from late Spring here, I am glad when I see them back.

I've seen it around quite a bit now. Maybe I'm more attuned to it.

It didn't stay still long so I had to snap quickly before it flew off.

@JudyEv Oh that is a gorgeous robin. He sure is different than what I see in my area. Thanks for showing me. You would like the Western Meadowlark that zips in and out of the sage brush. Yellow chested and singing like he is in the opera.

@sallypup Most birds are nice to see. I'm not so keen on crows.

He does. Maybe the water was a bit cold.

It can be tricky to find them in the book. In the end I searched for 'small birds in the Perth area' and a photo came up almost the same as mine - but not so blurry.

She's so cute. I noticed that we have a lot of birds this year, it seems to me that there were not so many of them last year

@JudyEv It is very possible that as soon as there are no people, nature wakes up, and plants and animals recover

It is a cute little bird. I have no idea how to determine what species they are unless they are Eagles, Owls or other large raptors.

That is a cute little bird. By the way, somebody dropped a brick/paver in your bird bath. You should probably remove it so the birds can swim and folic freely in the bath!

I meant to mention the brick in my discussion but forgot. It is actually holding down a feeder as the bath fills automatically when the reticulation is turned on. In this photo, you can see the hose to the left of the birdbath.

It's all very well knowing what they look like and the colours but that doesn't actually help you find a name for them.

We noticed the new birds here that may be the effect of cleaner air due to the lockdown. My wife twice spotted a blue bird but I have yet to see it.

Looks so tiny. Cooperative breeding among birds unheard off. Why don't the parents care for their babies

@JudyEv cooperative caring need to be more common with humans. Leaving a child home alone or under the care of a nanny who may be cruel is not a good idea. Neighbors can chip in while parents are at the workplace
