So there's this tutorial on youtube for finger crocheting a blanket. It's actually pretty simple as it only uses on stitch, and three strands of yarn as one. Anyway, last night I wanted to see what thirty chains would look like with just one strand of yarn. I had an idea, but I still wanted to see for myself. Plus I just wanted to play with yarn.
Here is my creation. I thought about unraveling it a few rows in but decided to keep going, and keep going, and then eventually I was nearly at the end of the skein and just decided to bind it off.
This isn't a full skein, by the way.
Don't you LOVE the colors of the yarn?
Can you spot my mistake?

I love the colors and can't tell how desperate you made me to try finger crocheting again. It was so much of fun

I am sad because I believe this yarn was discontinued and I bought it at a reduced price because of it. It is really beautiful and makes me think of autumn.
Did you know you can make yarn out of plastic?

@amitkokiladitya Oh I see. I've never made plarn (plastic yarn) either. I think it would only be good for certain projects, like a purse.

I love to crochet and especially like the color combinations. You did a good job!
I never heard of finger crocheting until now

I've also heard it referred to as hand crocheting. Basically it's using the index finger as a hook. It means that the heavier weighted yarn is best suited, but I guess a dexterous individual could use their pinky for a smaller stitch.
I am really only confident with the single and double crochet at the moment, and moreso the single.

@Marilynda1225 I like the popcorn stitch, and there is on that looks like a shell. I think it's technically a half double crochet, but I'm not sure.
For me, I was twisting too much when using a hook. That was part of it, but then I also kept dropping stitches and / or wasn't able to see them as well. I commend those who can use a hook. I do think that finger crochet is the lazy / easy way.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I like single crochet best too and double but not very adapt at more complicated stitches even though some are so beautiful. My mom was a great crocheter and could master almost any stitch she liked.
I doubt I'd be able to crochet using my finger and will probably make a mess if I tried it

@divalounger I had a larger stash and some looms for loom knitting but that just wasn't for me. I gave that all to my aunt who gave it all to my cousin. She's been loom knitting a lot it seems. The finger crochet is something I am more comfortable with.

I am pretty sure in all of my crazy dreams last night, that I ended up dreaming of it too. I can vaguely recall being in a store (in my dream) and looking at it all.
I am, every day I am practicing with the 'scrap' yarn I have.

It has been years since I've crocheted. I've been buying the crocheted afghans, and wanted to see if I could try again. I had yarn left over from when I tried to loom knit.

@thelme55 I tried to teach my niece finger knitting, she wasn't as amused. She's the type that has her face in the phone all day now.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I still remember when I loom knitted with my nieces years ago. It was fun.

If you look, one side is straight and the other is not. I did not pick up all the stitches on that end.

Yes, the colors are really cool. Is that a missed stitch on the lower left? Well, you asked! :-)

I had to get the thing again and have a look. It's just a wider stitch, but it looks as if I picked the right stitch up. What I was referring to was on the right. I missed a few stitches.
Oh well, it's just practice after all!

@LindaOHio I am sure that I will. A friend of mine said yesterday "Amber, it sounds like you've got a new hobby!"
I told her the same thing I'll tell you. All I really want is to make one blanket, that's all. If I end up doing more, that will be great too, but I'm focusing on the one thing for now.

Oh, I do love that yarn. It is so pretty. Yes, I did see your mistake, as it is one I commonly make with crocheting with a hook. I am playing with yarn making baby hats to donate.

I used my fingers to crochet this and I find it gives me more control. I am going to see if I can find the yarn again but I am willing to be it was a discontinued one that I bought.

I do love the color of the yarn. I don't see any mistake. I am afraid I would get terribly frustrated trying to learn, do something like that. I am not good with my hands, and have little patience.

I'm going to stick with the two basic stitches until I am a master at them. I tried to learn too many before, and that was part of the problem.
I forgot a few stitches on the right hand side of the project, that was the mistake.
The most difficult part (for me) is remember each step of a stitch.
The single crochet, which is what this is, goes like this :
Hook into a chain, then yarn over (drape the working yarn over the hook / or finger) and pull through the first loop. Yarn over again and pull through both loops. When I first started years ago, I always forgot to yarn over again, and ended up making a series of slip stitches instead.

No.
I think the very first time I was interested in crochet was when I was around 19-20 years old. I went to my mom's house and asked her to teach me but she told me her hands were too shakey. My aunt, who was there, taught me a few of the stitches. My grandmother bought me a crochet kit shortly after.
I've also tried finger knitting and loom knitting
I did the above work with my fingers and find it a lot easier than using a crochet hook.
