Upon consideration

Upon consideration of a few things I have decided not to be a Census enumerator. 1. I never got a confirmation e mail of my finger print appointment. 2. Ten years ago people were crazy. One of my coworkers had a shot gun pulled on her. Not this part of the state but still if it happened then it could happen now.. 3. Right now people are crazier than ten years ago. Ten years ago people felt that the Census violated their rights, and you hear what is going on RE: be safer at home and their rights. 4. Exposure risk. 5.I do all the housework, all the yard work, make all of Bob's appointments, etc. I do not need another layer of responsibility on top of that. 6. ALL the medical appointments we have coming up, then I start back to school training at the end of July. 7. Bob and I want to have some free time. So, Bob and I are hitting the road early in order to fill his prescriptions. Talk to you later.

Yikes. I'm not 100% sure what a census enumerator is, but don't think I'd want to be one, either.

The enumerator will be given lists of addresses that did not respond by mail or online to the census questionnaire, for whatever reason. The enumerator then makes personal contact and walks them through the questionnaire and sends it in. There are reasons people do not fill it out. They may be illegal or avoiding taxes, or illiterate, or anti government. Or the address may be abandoned. Ten years ago I had a farm house with a tree going through the roof and an undriveable driveway. I had to go to the courthouse and get tax records to send in to prove it was vacant.

I was going to do the census once but I had another job at the time, and they wanted me to work too many hours. I am still pursing the Corona Virus Tracker. I don't know how high my odds are as they have received 6,000 apps for 1,500 openings, but I do have a degree and my background is somewhat similar to what they are looking for..so we will see.

That is mostly by phone, correct? Good luck with your applications.

@GardenGerty Thanks, yeah it can be done remotely, that is why it is attractive. Thanks..I will need it with so many applying. I am going to try to stand out in some way so I don't get lost in the shuffle.

OUCH. As in, going to the houses and talking to people instead of entering the data? I wouldn’t take that job if I had to stand on a street corner and sell pencils to pay my bills! I think you’re quite wise to avoid that.

At least some of the people who did not file feel very skeptical of the government. Yeah. I will figure out the income aspect. I will get a school check in early June and one in late July so we have some time.

@GardenGerty — it’d be different if they just suddenly came up with this idea of “hey, let’s take a census!” But a census has been the law since 1790!!!!

Yes, and my dad is deteriorating. I need to go see him, and not take virus exposure with me.

It sounds like a good idea to give it a miss this time, it’s better to stay safe.
