Revealing the Nugget in my Pine Tree

Yesterday I posted about a nugget I found in my pine tree in the back yard. A fairly large nest too high for me to see.
As I walked back inside from trying to figure out what the nest was, I kept hearing mockingbirds making a lot of chatter. I kept looking and listening. And figured it out. It was their nest and I spotted a baby on the ground, he just flew out of the nest.
I almost stepped on him, he was so small. The sounds from the parents were telling the baby to be still. A danger call to the baby. And he was frozen. I snapped these photos above.
I looked again at the high nest and there was another baby perched on the limb, just outside the nest. He was getting ready to fledge as well. If you look closely you can see him on the limb, beneath the nest in the photo.
And the other photo is the male mockingbird as he was chattering away to the babies. These birds are not large. They are about 10 inches long and they sing all day long. They built the perfect nest.
Now you know the rest of the story about that nugget of a nest in my pines.
More to come on the wren and cardinal nests in the front yard when I get time.

So is the baby on the ground going to be able to fly back up to the nest, or is that not an option anymore? And if not, where does that baby bird go from here? It surely can't be safe sitting on the ground like that!

@CarolDM So do they just stay on the ground until such time as they can fly easily? I hope they seek shelter while on the ground! I can't believe how vulnerable they become at that point. It's amazing that any birds survive to grow to adulthood!

@moffittjc They move around and follow the parents, they will help hide them and shelter them. They get very defensive now when I walk in the yard. The parents will sing very loud to warn the babies. It is how each bird species has to do for survival. I am always afraid for them at first but they already have instincts to hide.

I was going to do a post about birds--I once owned over 21 at one time in my apartment--after I took a shot of a heron outside my window and instead decided I wanted a few more birds so will do it over the weekend. They are fascinating creatures!

Were those mockingbirds mocking you???
What a beautiful sight!!! And I’ll bet you’re so thankful you didn’t accidentally step on the baby!

that is so awesome - what a wonderful find! I am sad it wasn't big bird, from Sesame street, but happy that it was a mockingbird~!
