It's Magic Mushroom season

Our area is having its first rains of the season which means that mushrooms will be popping up. Because of the continual tillage, mushrooms aren’t seen too often in the paddocks. It was different when I was a child. However, an area near us has quite a reputation for ‘magic mushrooms’ which grow in the bushland there. About this time, some free-spirited foragers will be making their way to this area and searching for these fungi which give a psychedelic high when eaten. The correct name for the variety is psilocybin mushrooms and, while the effect can be mild when eaten, it can also be very hazardous and result in bizarre behaviour. One German backpacker, while under the influence of the fungi, drove to Perth, sold his $10,000 car for just $1,000 and worked out in a random gym for three hours. He told police he had no control over himself whatsoever. Another went missing for four days and was found sleeping under a log. At the moment, police are patrolling back roads trying to stop people from this dangerous practice. Those found with the mushrooms can be fined for drug possession. I think we’ll continue to buy our mushrooms from the supermarket. Photo is of some fungi that grows in our bush.

Oh my goodness, people are crazy, many wild mushrooms are dangerous, hallucinogen or even worse. Also our forest guards patrol to avoid young people to do something dangerous.

It looks like your magic mushroom there can give an effect tenfold of the effect of the weed.

@JudyEv if it can create hallucination like the selling of the car then it can really mess up the brain.

Yes we must never eat wild mushrooms as they could have toxic chemicals which can alter our mind. Stick to the mushroom from your local store.

I have heard about those mushrooms but I wouldn't dare eat any of them. I prefer mine in the tomato sauce I buy for my noodles.

We like to go mushroom hunting, but not that kind of mushroom. LOL... We pick morals, which can be found in various sizes from the size of my pinky finger to an apple. We only find the small ones, but we didn't find any this year because my husband was healing from his heart surgery.

I read a book by a Canadian lady and she spoke about the different mushrooms and which were edible, etc. I wouldn't trust myself with any of ours other than the field mushrooms that we sometimes find. But I'm happy to buy what we need from the supermarket.

@judyev we used to have them sprouting annually in our back garden and we would the young man down the road furtively sneaking in for them. A well-aimed hosepipe put an end to that.

I always buy the mushroom from the market. Here occasionally the news will be about people who picked the wild mushrooms and got poisoned. I really can't tell which mushrooms are poisonous or not. It is the best to buy it from the market

Good point. Maybe they watched to see what ones animals ate. I'm not sure if animals eat them or not. But same dilemma with most plant foods I guess.
