Sounds I love from long ago

One sound I don't hear much anymore is the sounds of a train in the distance. The only trains that still come through our town is probably for for chemical mostly although we do have new factories here now too. I was going to try to capture the sounds with my phone but it's no longer blowing it's horn. Maybe in a bit. I heard trains a lot when growing up and would enjoy listening to The beeping of the horns mostly when I was supposed to be sleeping. I can hear the rumble in the distance, can you? And then there's the horn. It's almost at the end and barely heard at least with my phone. Maybe your computers can up the sound a bit more to hear it better. Most of the train tracks have been removed here but a few are left.

My friend lives at the tip of the county to the North, and I live at the tip of the county to the South. The tracks near us are no longer in operation, but hers are. When I'm at her house, we can hear them, but of course they are not passenger trains. We do not have a train station in our county anymore. I love the sound of trains.

@MarshaMusselman We can go to the next county over to get on a train, but to my knowledge, the three other counties surrounding us do not have a passenger train station either. It's a pity, I think more train stations should open up for passengers again. I know there's a movement of people trying to get high speed rail for more of the country.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I've not heard of that movement and it may not be feasible in Michigan since we're almost completely surrounded by water. Unless it were to run North to south. Not everyone wants to go to the upper peninsula but some might be willing for a short cut to Wisconsin. Although I doubt there's enough land to our in rails but what do I know?

Ours aren't passenger trains either. To my knowledge the closest one we had even when I was younger was around the thumb of Michigan, two hours away. But there were many more freight trains in the area.

seems like we often end up near trains, I used to live near one as a kid and our current house is about a mile from one. So on a summer night you can hear the whistle very well.

@MarshaMusselman I think all freight, we have several car factories and warehouses here. every half hour. Every Easter Sunday we have to wait for the train to go by, during our sunrise services.

@mom210 even though a few do cross some roads I've not had to wait much at all if at all in recent years

Are they mostly freight trains, Kimberly, it ate they passenger trains too? Heck, I don't even know if passenger trains still run anywhere or not. I rode one back in the seventies for French class two different years. We went to Montreal and the next year to Quebec.

The railroad station is not very far, but we do not hear the trains from home, it is really peaceful here. A sound I miss, the waves of the Mediterranean sea.

@MarshaMusselman Our apartment was close to the sea, during the summer nights we heard the waves from the windows of our bedroom.

I would miss waves too even though I've never lived near a any water that had waves I've... I just remembered I lived in CT one year and out house was too blocks from the sound but I couldn't hear the waves until we were on the beach. I do miss that beach though and that was back in the early eighties.

We have a train track that is very close to us. When we sit on the balcony, you can hear the horn and the train bumping along the tracks. It's almost soothing to me.

That's how I feel too. When I hear the noises it makes even that far in the distance it takes me back to trying to sleep in my parents bed probably when they had people over. Our bedroom was closest to the main ares of the house.

Sometimes I can hear the sound of the train in Florida at night if our lanai doors are opened. I find it very soothing.

I think that is the general consensus here. The sounds wouldn't sooth me to sleep unless it was ongoing I guess it might but I do enjoy it and the memories it brings back to me.

You meant to say rain not train, right? It's raining too much where you live? Rain sounds can be soothing too but not when the ground is saturated already.
