A rare black galah makes its appearance in South Australia

For a few weeks now, I haven’t found anything in our news which would be of much interest to my Lotters. However, over the last few days there have been a couple of items. One was the sighting of a rare black galah. Galahs are usually pink and grey like the ones in the photo. The black colouring is called ‘melanism’ and is due to a mutation which results in the increased development of a dark-coloured pigment. Another example of melanism was a black kookaburra which was sighted in Manjimup, a few towns south of us. A genetic mutation causing the opposite effect of the feathers being completely white is called ‘leucism’. Leucism occurs much more often and such birds are often taken by predators very quickly because they stand out so clearly. To call someone in Australia a ‘galah’ is a derogatory term, meaning a bit stupid or an idiot. It can also be used as a term of endearment, of a sort.

Poor birds, they have no luck, a colour that attracts predators is not funny. A derogatory term "meaning a bit stupid" in Italian is calling someone "piccione" (pigeon). Those birds are not really smart.

They look a lot like parrots except for the color. Interesting how a term that should be used to identify an animal can be used to refer to people in an insulting way.

Perhaps it's due to either their size or coloring @JudyEv ?

I couldn't seem to find much difference between parrots, galahs and cockatoos. I don't know why one term is used rather than another.

@rebelann I don't know. As I said, I couldn't really find any information on the differences, if any.

We do have a lot of unique flora and fauna. I guess it comes from being so cut off from the rest of the world.

How cool is that! As for the kookaburra, I remember singing that song when I was a kid, “Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree.” Never knew it was a real animal, just thought it was something silly made up for a kids’ song.

When calling someone a galah, you need to be careful of the intonation. I've already made a galah of myself as I copied the text twice then totally misunderstood what JJ was trying to tell me. So I illustrated my own discussion. lol
