Update on my Mom

Yesterday after my first post, we were told that my mother's health had declined. She has bacterial pneumonia.
My siblings and I, along with a few of our children, met at our local hospital. The doctor said she was on oxygen and strong antibiotics. She said that even with all they are doing for mom, she may not survive this.
People with Alzheimer's forget to cough. They don't get enough movement to get their lungs going and therefore are more prone to get pneumonia.
After the meeting with her doctor, my sister and I went up to see mom. She was only allowed one visitor at a time. I went in to see her first. She was sleeping in a sitting position. She wore an oxygen mask. I rubbed her earlobe and spoke to her softly. Here eyes fluttered or a second. I knew she heard me. Told her I loved her. Rubbed her shoulder and told her I would be back to see her soon.
I covered her with the blanket before I left.
Today, I woke to good news from my brother, who is her health proxy. Mom is doing better. She is still on oxygen, but no longer needs the mask. She was able to drink a bit of water and answer the nurses questions with one word replies. Yesterday she couldn't talk at all.
She is still weak. She still has a long road ahead of her. Praying that she pulls through this.

@LadyDuck One of my elderly clients had a doctor that would tell her "well, you are in your 90's", and it felt like he was writing her off just because of her age. She changed doctors and got much better treatment. The woman lived to see her 100th birthday.
My Mom has Alzheimer's, has a DNR and I believe that is what brought on the comment that we should consider comfort care. Really gets me angry when I think about it. Yes, she does have both, but the DNR is for life support. If she has a chance to survive, help her.

@ElusiveButterfly I have to say that I noticed that doctors are no more as good as they were in the past... too much technology in our days, it's not enough to be a good doctor.

I wish I could get to see her though. She has to go through one more COVID test before she can go back to her room. It is then that we can visit her in the courtyard.

@rebelann she seemed to be a bit more with it when we talked to her on FaceTime. I am going to set up a time to talk with her today. Have to keep her aware that we are her family and love her so much.

I am glad she was able to drink some water and answer the nurses questions. I hope the doctor's warning was just being overcautious.
If she's in the ICU, I think they tend to do do that, give the worse prognosis so that families can be prepared, even before this pandemic.

She is actually not in ICU. I believe the ICU is where they are keeping the COVID patients. There are none there at the present time. I am thankful for that.
They did have her room set up to treat COVID patients though.

@ElusiveButterfly It's good there are no COVID patients. Here, at least as far as a few weeks ago, they were not letting anyone in to see their family no matter the ward they were in or what they were in for.

@Hannihar She is in isolation until her COVID test comes back. She will be moved back to her room once it comes back, that is if it is negative.
