It's Time to Start the Weekend

Yesterday started on a positive note for me. I had checked my investment accounts and saw that I had gained back all the losses I had incurred during the stock market sell-off at the beginning of the corona crisis. In fact, my earnings were back in positive territory, about 5% above where they were when the meltdown first started. I should have just quit right there while I was ahead. But nope, the forces of evil could not let me be content with my short-lived happiness. I woke up this morning and saw that the stock market took a nose dive again yesterday. Great, there went all those gains! No panicking though, I know I'll make all that money back eventually. In fact, it's a golden opportunity to buy even more stocks right now. But no, things couldn't just stop there. I got back from the grocery store around lunchtime, and noticed it felt warm inside my house. Upon further inspection, my AC went out. Guys, I have no AC in my house! In Florida! In the summer! Condenser coil is shot. Might have to replace the entire AC. Not gonna be cheap. Will find out soon enough, as I was lucky to get a reputable AC guy out right away to work on it. So how do you turn a bad day upside down? You start the weekend early by saying "F-you!" to the stock market, to the AC, and to work, and start mixing frozen margaritas with your sweetie-pie! It's time to get this party started! Who wants to join? We've got everything we need to make margaritas, pina coladas, rum runners and more. Let's turn this into a tropical fiesta!

@Tampa_girl7 It made the whole situation a little less stressful. But even if I didn't have the home warranty, I still had enough in my emergency savings stash to cover the cost. The real savings is going to come long-term by the reduced energy bills I have each month due to a new high-efficiency system.

Five thousand dollars later I have a brand new AC in my house and all is right with the world again! It's nice and cool in here! Thankfully, I purchased home warranty insurance on all my mechanical equipment when I bought the house a few years ago, so I can file a claim to be reimbursed for the cost, less my deductible. So I'll probably only be out $250 when its all said and done. That's money well spent for a brand new, energy efficient system.

I'm so sorry about your a/c and so glad someone will work on it soon. You definitely need one in Florida. Ours is running all the time and our neighbor checks on it weekly. It's pretty new and better not break. We pulled several investments at the first sign of the pandemic and are letting the rest ride. They will eventually come back and so will yours. I'd join you immediately, but it's Friday date night here and hubs has my martini supplies ready to go. Hope everything works out for you!!!!

This fiesta is starting to feel very tropical in here! Mainly because it is warming up so quickly! Now if I only had some palm trees, white sandy beach sand, and cool ocean waves here, I wouldn't mind the heat so much!

@DocAndersen Well, at least it's a training session. I had a couple of those this week, they were welcome distractions from my normal work routine.

I noticed my investments were below where they started and panicked a bit, was more saddened I think. But my husband assured me they would go back up. This was the inheritance money I got from my mother that I invested in mutual funds. You don't like to see your money go under what you started with. Times are hard enough. But I also did see the numbers go back up and over and breathed a sigh of relief.

As long as you don't need that money right away, you can let it sit in the mutual funds, and over time it will go back up. The key is patience. You can enjoy a cold adult beverage of your choice while you wait.

Ah man, I missed the party!!! I hope you got the air fixed by now! That would be miserable. I always think of the "old" days with no AC. Gotta have respect for those folks.

@moffittjc Yep, we are pampered today with electricity, a/c, bathrooms, cars, etc. I bet those people worked their buns off and that is just from the things I have to do and the time it takes. The old ways have to be a bit slower.

@kareng Yes, we are spoiled beyond our wildest beliefs. And although I do love all the creature comforts we enjoy in these modern times, I have also been able to spend weeks at at time "roughing" it out in the wilderness with nothing more than a backpack strapped to my back.

Yes, the AC is back working. Had to get a new unit. Thank goodness for a home warranty policy! Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to afford a new system! Like you, I am always thinking back to the old days and wonder how they ever survived without AC!

Last week certainly was a roller coaster, but I look at dips in the market as a good thing, because it means I will be able to purchase stocks and mutual funds at discounted prices. I'm still up for the year overall, so I'm not too worried.

Definitely enjoyed the margaritas, and yes, the AC unit was replaced a couple of hours later. It did get pretty hot inside, but the frozen margaritas helped. And boy did that cool air feel great when the AC finally started working again!

@JudyEv They are very expensive, and very essential here in Florida. But thankfully, I have an insurance policy on my home's mechanical equipment that will cover most of the cost of replacing the AC unit.

I keep mine at 75 degrees 24/7. Like you, I would prefer it to be at 68 degrees, but my electric bill would be a little too high for my comfort. But, with this new energy-efficient system that was just installed, I may be able to bump my temp down colder and still pay the same in my electric bill. We'll see. I want to get through this summer first and see the comparison of my electric bills this summer compared to last summer. It will help me determine exactly how efficient this new AC really is.
