Making another display case

Now that we have tidied up our workshop, we decided to make another little box which will be a gift for a little friend in Austria. We made one in jarrah, an Australian reddish wood, but we’re using pine for this one. The last one had a slide-on lid but this one will be hinged. In the photo, the box has been glued together and left clamped overnight. Today, Vince attached the hinges and lid, then sanded the whole thing. Next, he’ll add a little ‘handle’ then give the whole thing several coats of clear varnish. It’s a good job we’re not charging by the hour as no-one would be able to avoid our items. We're expecting more heavy rain tonight. Bad weather upsets the TV signal. It's lucky we don't rely on TV for our entertainment.

It seems that Vince is enjoying the project in the workshop.

It's now been sanded and it's ready to be varnished.

I can't wait to find a place big enough to have a workshop. Even if my husband didn't utilize it I would use it!! We badly need rain here. They have said that we may be having drought conditions by the end of summer. Hard to keep my sad little garden watered.

@JudyEv I may need to start doing that. Our landlord has sent notice that the well is low because of lack of rain. We are supposed to get some rain today and for the next 4 days, but that remains to be seen.

@ElusiveButterfly So do you rely on well water? That sounds a bit worrying.

I remember on the farm we would bucket out the bath and laundry water on to Mum's precious plants.

Do you have a satellite TV? I remember that my mother in law had it and bad weather always caused TV problems.

@JudyEv Exactly, the screen pixellates, my mother in law used to register some shows to give to us and most of the time the most important scenes were pixellated.

@LadyDuck It always happens at the points where you most want to see and hear.

Yes, we do. The screen pixellates when the weather is bad - and it always happens just when you would rather it didn't.

With the busy lifestyle you and Vince enjoy, it's a wonder you ever have time to take on projects such as building display boxes! But somehow you find the time to squeeze in these neat little projects. I hope this new display box comes out as beautiful as the last you one you made!

We haven't had much to do lately. The rides start again in a couple of weeks and hopefully will continue each fortnight. It will be good to take off with the caravan again.

@moffittjc I'm staggered. I have come across it before but 'fortnight' (two weeks) is used so, so often here I had no idea it wasn't common in other countries. As I've said before, it's sometimes hard to judge what needs explaining or whether you're going to come across as patronising.

Luckily we are making the box from scrap materials as the postage will be very expensive. I don't know exactly but possibly $50 or more.
