Blue Treasure Made my Day

Yesterday I shared a bluebird nest with you in my backyard bluebird house. Went out to peek inside earlier and there it was. One tiny blue egg. They are about the size of a peanut M&M candy. They lay one egg a day. Fingers crossed for a successful nest this time. Being in a house will be some protection.

When I had a robins nest in my yard their eggs were a pretty blue as well and they too laid one a day. I wonder if that’s what happened with all birds. Turkeys lay so many that would be many days before they were all done.

All of the birds I have dealt with do the same with one egg per day.

They are tiny, you should see the babies when they hatch. This is why I am the crazy bird lady. Thanks BTW, I try to add my copyright without making it too obvious.

I never knew blue birds layed blue eggs. Its the size of a chicken egg. Do birds recognise their eggs. if I replace the egg with a chicken egg will the bird know.

@jayanth_77 Most birds don’t have egg recognition abilities. However, parents do keep track of the total mass of eggs in their nest. If another egg, like a cowbird (happens frequently) lays an egg, the egg stays untouched. The bluebird does not incubate that egg. At least that has been my experience. Sometimes they will abandon the entire nest if an egg is laid from a different species of bird. I have seen this happen.

Yes they are blue. Much smaller than a chicken egg. The size of a peanut M&M piece of candy! Yes the bird will know.

@CarolDM How do the bird know that the eggs have been replaced. The cuckoo bird lays her eggs in crow's nest and the crow never knows. it hatches the eggs and takes care of it as her own.

They are shiny when first laid, then the female rolls the eggs and they are dull.
