Stirred up a hornets' nest

At least that is what I think.
It could have been a yellow jacket.
Whatever stung me was more than a wasp. I did not see the actual critter, but when I turned the board over I wanted to move, I saw one fly out.
I cannot decide if it was a hornet or yellow jacket--they are cousins you know.
I did not hit him, but my leg has what appears to be a bruise the size of a half dollar. I am glad I got some plantain on it. It does not hurt. It is not hot to the touch and there is no swelling.
When I realized how it was spreading, I took a benadryl and a couple of aspirin.
If I was going to have anaphylaxis or anything, it would have happened already.
Busy day going to see my dad and brother tomorrow. Sleepy right now. May see you very very early.

People who have problems with bees know it when they are small. Still, it hurts. Take care.

When I was a young teen my neighbor kept honey bees. I was all the time stepping on them in the clover. Problem with bees is that sometimes the reaction increases with each sting. It did with me. I had not been stung by a yellow jacket before. Not often by wasps, either, since I was six.

@marguicha No, at least not in my case or in his daughter's case. The venom is a protein and it activates your body to respond more each time.

Oh, me too. Four years ago a black wasp got caught in my clothes and I had several stings. Even with plantain they swelled up more but actually hurt less.

It was painful at the time and I was surprised that it looks like a bruise.

I was surprised at that, but I know plantain takes the sting out quickly. Do you have any growing at your place?

@GardenGerty Not that I have seen growing. But the baking soda paste works very well to. I just have to go in the house to get it.

It still looks like a bruise, but it does not hurt much at all.

Sometimes you get other venoms from them if they have killed things like spiders. I did not have a big allergic reaction so I am okay.

We have wasps all around here. I try to keep the nests knocked down. Hornets nest lower to the ground and this nest was actually under a board that I want to make into a shelf. Wasp and hornet spray will shoot about twenty feet so you can be safe if you spray them.

When bit or stung the best remedy is plantain. It is a weed and I let it grow freely in my driveways so I always have some.

I seldom get them, but I am a tough old gal like my granny was. She would take a clump of mud and put on them. It looked so funny to me.

@rebelann Until I knew about plantain, baking soda is what I used.

I hate bee or wasp stings. To me, wasp stings hurt worse than a bee sting. When my daughter was very young, she was swinging and along came this huge humble bee. It got caught in her hair and stung her on the neck. It made her extremely sick.

My neighbor who raised bees said wasp stings were worse because wasps kill other things with their sting and you get their venom and whatever they have killed as well.

@GardenGerty I didn't know that, but it makes sense. I always thought once a wasp stings they die.

Yes, I read that when they sting they leave a phermone that alerts the whole nest and angers them and makes them attack. I did not have a real bad reaction, but the sting plus lots of yard work really wiped me out.

I hope it's better now. I hate/like bees. I know they do a good duty, but I don't like getting stung.

It does not happen to me often. The black wasps are appreciating my lavender flowers today.
