So That Is Art

I suppose one could call Cattelan an artist. His art is downright weird. He seems to delight in taping stuff to walls using duct tape. Cattelan created a piece of "art" to symbolize "global trade." That piece of art is a banana duct-taped to a wall titled "Comedian," and it comes with a certificate of authenticity. Cattelan was successful in getting collectors to buy his duct-taped-to-the-wall bananas for $120,000. To enjoy that piece of art, the banana can be replaced when it reaches the rotting-stage." I think non-artist folks could duct-tape their own bananas, or anything else for that matter, to a wall and call it "art." Photo: artsy.net

I can do better, I have than more than one banana in the kitchen I can duct-tape them even giving an interesting form. I have read of an artist who did worse, but it is too gross to be written.

@Corbin5 I am wondering what he was thinking myself. Why duct tape? Why not packing tape if it was supposed to symbolize global trade?

@ScribbledAdNauseum We need to contact him and let him know that packing tape should of been used. He probably could have gotten a lot more cash if he had used packing tape.

@Ecoy41 I suppose everyone sees the value of a piece of art differently. I sure do not want a banana duct-taped to a wall, that's for sure.

@Corbin5 I was thinking it was a waste of a good banana to duct tape it to the wall. It's better in the stomach.

Well, perhaps it could be a lesson in "eating fruit before it rots." Bananas are ugly when rotten so that piece of art would encourage humans to eat their banana, and other fruits, right away.

@Corbin5 but i read an aricle that the rotten bananas have nutrients that are good for one's health. i will try to search that on net and make a discussion about it.

I am an artist. I've been affixing duct tape on many things for years. Would you like a pipe that is in my basement? It was duct taped last week and the price tag is 150,000 (I used more duct tape on this one)!

Have you ever been to the Guggenheim Museum in New York City? Inside the museum there is a framed painting, I forget who the artist was, but it was just a rectangular piece of white canvas, with a small black circle in the middle of it. Nothing more. I just had to shake my head. If that's art, then I should be able to produce very expensive pieces of artwork that I will gladly sell to the art museums of New York.

You know, I think we all can be called artists thanks to those pieces of art that require no artistic ability at all. I have been The Art Institute of Chicago quite a few times, and I am sure there is "art" displayed that makes a person scratch his or her head. I cannot recall any head-scratchers, however.
