Most Indian families do not encourage their sons to learn cooking. When I started to teach my son some basic kitchen skills like warming up his food when he was 12 years old my family was not too happy about that, But being a single parent and going to work I had no option. Am happy now when I am sick and have been advised bed rest he is able to manage all the cooking. He does not know to cook any non-vegetarian food but anyways doctor has asked me to be on a veg diet for now.

You remind me of my mother who taught my sisters and one brother in the kitchen. That brother was younger than I but he was in charge of the kitchen when my mother was not around.

In our family when we were growing up the work was divided among all of us the duty of cooking was always on the eldest who was present at home. And since I was the youngest my turn never came!!!! I learnt to cook only after my kids were born. But am happy my kids like my cooking.

@mayka123 that is the standard - the eldest first down to the youngest. But the first 3 eldest children were not interested in the kitchen... I am the 3rd, waheehee.

You did the right thing involving your son in kitchen. I had to face the difficulty when I was abroad and had to cook my meal at home as I could not take food outside, I faced lot of difficulties. I had never involved in cooking at home before.

A few of my colleagues who live alone and could not call their maids during the lockdown were in a very bad state. They knew to cook limited items and had to eat the same thing over and over again.

@mayka123 Yes I gave you my instance when I had to face the difficulty being abroad. The same situation has cropped up in our own country because of this covid pandemic.

I'm glad you taught your son to cook. It may become his asset in future. My son is the house chef due to the fact that his wife of 6 yrs is 'allergic' to cooking. Allergic because she has no initiative to learn cooking. My son has never been cooking when he was with me but now call me every now and then for cooking guidance.

I like the fact that my son does not hesitate to try out new dishes when I am around to guide him. I too was never fond of cooking ever. But I cook because I don't like ordering food from out or getting a cook to come and cook every day for me.

Why would they care if you teach him to cook, they should be proud. I wished some one taught me how to cook when I was young, I only learned how to clean and laundry.

The older generation always believed that cooking and house chores were the jobs of women. Even my mom was upset because I was teaching my son all household chores.

Yes I am happy he is able to survive on the basics he knows. I have seen some colleagues having a lot of problems because they are unable to manage now without a cook or maid coming to help.

I grew up in a family where everyone needed to know all the basics of house chores and cooking and got married in a family where it was believed that men should not be doing anything in the house. Luckily my husband loved to cook and my mother in law was not at all happy about him helping me.

@anil02 I have made it clear to my son that if he expects his wife to work outside then both should together manage the house chores.

@mayka123 Time is changed so we must be change with time, I too like to help my wife in house chores. I am disable for last 25 years and I am not doing any offline job for 2 years. Most of mother in-laws have different attitude for daughter-in-law and daughter. Some old ladies never try to understand that time is changed. When a female can earn than why a male can't work house chores

Many got used to the idea of their parents, wife or else a maid cooking for them and have never tried experimenting themselves ever.

@mayka123 It's so different in the US. Here, many men help their wives and are even better at cooking than the women are.

I think all young people should be taught basic cooking skills. Boys won't always have someone around to look after them - and why should they not look after themselves? You are now reaping the benefit of your earlier work. I hope you recover quickly.

I have always been telling my family the same thing. I was married in a family that believed that cooking should only be done by the ladies and men should not go into the kitchen and work.

It does when on days I am unwell or too busy with my office work. Also knowing all skills does not harm anyone in any way.
