Yesterday, in a progressive Facebook group, someone asked what she could put out with her American flag so that people wouldn't automatically assume she was a Trump supporter. There were lots of suggestions, like put out a Pride flag next to it.
Later the same day, I saw an invitation to a Black Lives Matter event where we were encouraged to bring flags and wear red, white and blue. The idea was that conservatives in this country have co-opted patriotism, the flag and love of country as supposedly belonging to them, when the truth is that those things belong to all Americans.
So a group of us stood on a corner in Placerville, in a very conservative county in California, waving our flags and our Black Lives Matter signs and declared that we love our country too. We want change, are demanding change, change is necessary, but the people who say we hate our country are liars, and they are afraid.
Wanting things to move forward in our country is not hatred, it is love.

Love can bring changes but this isn't true in all cases as well

When I went to the US for the first time, in 1957, placing a flag was a duty in the 4th of July. The people had to put it away at sundown. When I went back many years later, I was confused at some houses with flags every day and others with no flags. Someone explained. And I understood that, after all, it had to do with a war between Americans and not about the pride of being one. I feel it is a shame. I´m sure there is a law and that nobody cares about it any longer.

i couldn't agree more, Dawn. Wanting to make the country better is love of country and always has been. I think it's wonderful you did that.
