Tomatoes from my neighbor

Japan

I have these lovely elderly neighbors on one side of me, who have featured in my posts here before. They rent a small garden plot so they can grow vegetables and fruits. Today, I went grocery shopping early so I wouldn't be in a crowded store. I came back with the fresh vegetables and fruits and frozen vegetables that I had bought, but I had not bought tomatoes. I have a small mini-tomato plant but I ate up everything on it the other day. Anyway, my neighbor saw me coming home and called out to me. She handed me two huge red tomatoes, apologizing that they were ripe (Japanese people tend to like their tomatoes partly green when they buy them) and said I needed to eat them immediately because they had ripened in the field. I told her that is exactly the very best tomato taste, and my parents had grown tomatoes and always picked them when ripe. She agreed that was the tastiest, but said "I feel the responsibility to warn you to eat them soon." Isn't she sweet? Like I'm the little kid and wouldn't know that. (Actually they will last a few days in the fridge, but I certainly will eat one today.) Do you share garden produce with neighbors?

You have a good neighbor who cares for plants. They even rented a garden.

That is popular among elderly people. They each have a small area in a sunny place and they have a gardening community. That is one way elderly people like to get together. They can enjoy fellowship and produce healthy food as well. Last year my neighbor ended up with 20 watermelons and lots of corn. So of course people along my street benefited.

@petatonicsca do you mean to say the garden is not beside where they live, it is in a garden area? If that is the case then they would be meeting the other neighbors in the garden area regularly.

@Alexandoy Yes, we don't have enough space where there are houses. There are people who lend out their fields in small sections (about 2 meters by 3 meters or so) so that people in Tokyo can enjoy gardening. All the patches are marked off with tiny walking paths between them. The other thing is that where houses are, we don't have a lot of sunshine reaching the ground.

My neighbor is also a very nice person. They plant lemongrass in front of his house. At harvest they share a lot of lemongrass with us. We use part of the lemongrass as a spice, the rest I planted in my yard.

I like lemongrass. I had a pot of it once. It smells very nice and makes good tea.

Elderly people (and I have to admit I'm one of them) feel the need to pass on their knowledge sometimes. She sounds a really lovely neighbour. Enjoy your tomatoes.

I'm moving toward that "elderly people" time too. But not there quite yet.

That's too bad, unless you don't like gardening. I like doing it when on vacation, but usually the time to plant is when I'm still in school. This year since I was teaching online from home, I was here to water and take care of my plants.

@petatonicsca My late parents like gardening. I have yet to learn that profession.

We are not used to eating tomatoes like a fruit. It seems you love the taste of tomatoes right from the plant.

I cut them up and eat them in salads.
